Personally, I don't think Lee would have given the time of day to his modern-day "supporters"; I recall reading that he told soldiers who wanted to go on fighting after Appomattox not to be silly, and to go home and make the peace work. Didn't he tell someone who said that there would be statues of him all over the South one day, that "I have no desire to spend the rest of eternity being used as a latrine by pigeons"?
And another thing; the supposed "defenders of Southern culture" didn't seem to principally concerned with statues; they were mostly shouting stuff about Jews!

Charlottesville was the result of two groups of assholes deliberately staging a confrontation that they knew would result in violence. On one side you had neo-nazis. If you'd take the time to read some actual history, you'd find out that yes, Lee was in fact in favor of abolition, and his views on race, while fucked up by today's standards, were in fact inline with most progressive opinions of the time.
