The "jelly bomb" product mentioned in another forum is, according to the vendor, sodium alginate. This is one of the materials your dentist might use to make an impression of a tooth from which a crown would be made. It has some pretty significant drawbacks insofar as its use for making a quicksand pit is concerned. One is its cost, which is typically about $35.00 a pound. It might be quite a bit lower depending on the grade but its still very expensive. Second, and probably prohibitively, an alginate impression will last a few days at best. At room or outdoor temperatures I would expect its shelf life to be a good deal less.

True. I have used this material for resin castings & it has a very limited shelf life. It's designed for instant mold set up to take impressions. A fantastic material to ever be thought of for a QS immersion is silicone rubber before adding the hardener - but super-expensive & dangerous. If you want to see a scene where this type of substance was used watch the "Batman & Robin" movie (Arnold Mr.Freeze) where Robin fall into a green vat of this kind of stuff.

Indeed the silicone material ridiculously expensive. And I hope no one thinks what you are talking about here is the kind that gives of a vinegar smell. That stuff will burn the skin very badly if used in skin contact while it cures.

That's a bit steep for sinking. A one cubic yard pit, which is really too small to be of much use, would contain approximately 216 gallons. I don't think the Gallium Polykryptonite pit, north of 2400 gallons, will be converted any time soon.
