Hey, at least teens stopped setting themselves on fire! Remember the fire challenge from a few years back? *shudders* That sent my anxiety through the roof! I have an almost paralyzing fear of fire.

But seriously, why would anyone think eating laundry pods is a good idea? What part of, "this is a chemical" do they not understand? What's the appeal?

When my daughter was very young we lectured her on the inadvisability of ingesting the similar looking dishwasher pods. Her response at the age of four was pretty much that was gross and you would have to be stupid to do it. She's always been a very bright kid who avoids social media and won't take Tylenol without a doctors order. There's got to be a connection.

Ten or twenty years ago there were some studies done that showed that, at the college level at least, athletes were more likely to use alcohol and tobacco than non-athletes. The hypothesis was advanced that both (participation in athletics and trying alcohol and tobacco) were risky behaviors and athletes were more prone to take risks that other students. That may be correct (and I agree that athletes are risk takers) but I always figured that too many knocks on the head had something to do with it.

I've seen it explained on Tumblr as the monkey brain seeing it as really good fruit. Brightly colored, dense yet soft (no cellulose) and the fruity smell, and the person was self aware enough to see the inner monkey perk up every time they did laundry and had to smack it back down. I'm wondering if they're going to be forced to change the color, and possibly the smell, for liability purposes.

We use liquid detergent for our clothes, and the "pods" we buy for the dishwasher are hard and pretty much impossible to mistake for an edible substance.

Here in UK we've had several fatalities with people (not just kids but also seniors) confusing fruit-scented dishwasher detergents with soft drinks; one manufacturer had to withdraw its blackcurrant-scented detergent from the market.

I went and bought some of these out of curiosity today (usually use liquid detergent). No joke, they actually do smell like they would taste good. I thought people were exaggerating the danger but I can totally see a little kid stuffing one of these into their mouth.

We did some pretty dumb things as children. For example, for about a nickel we could get a roll of what were (and I think still are) called "caps. A roll went inside a toy pistol that had a hammer that would cause an actual explosion (they contained gunpowder) when it hit the center of each cap. There were something like fifty caps in a roll. Rather than play with our toy guns we put a whole roll at a time on some concrete surface and set it all off at once with a sledge hammer. This was cool but not too bright. There was also a brief period when the cool thing to do was to eat peanuts, shell and all. Yuck!
