For multiple lit models, it would be simpler to use backgrounds that were shot on cloudy days, which are free of shadows.

True, but even on cloudy days ambient light has directionality, so some work will need to be done to make the lighting appear consistent. One thing I did sometimes was to try to find subjects shot in natural light, though I didn't find that many suitable ones.
