The transition to DVD was not easy, but it got done. Even so, I doubt I will ever be caught without a working VHS machine.

As far as professional quicksand films are concerned, will there ever be a transition to Bluray or will Bluray be skipped entirely in favor of digital only? I think there will always be a demand for physical media in every hobby and subculture, even if the demand becomes smaller and smaller as time moves on and technology advances.

I have all of the hardware and software needed to produce Blue Ray disks except for the authoring software. That would be easy enough to acquire. However, it is not at all clear if there is any demand for this.

As for the future of playable physical media, I think that would be usb sticks.

USB memory sticks, or thumb drives, could certainly be a way to store one's collection of scenes and play it on various devices. However, I am doubtful it would be practical as a means of distribution. As cheap as they are they would add more than is likely to be justified to the cost. For the occasional customer who wanted it, it would probably be less expensive for the customer to send the stick to the producer to send back with the desired scenes. That would involve a delay of a week or so but might be viable for an order of enough scenes to fill a fairly large stick. For most people, however, I expect it would be much simpler, and cheaper, to receive the desired material on line.

Blu-Ray image quality far exceeds what is generally accepted as high def download 'quality'. It's not just a mathematical certainty. I have seen this with my own eyes while running tests.

I haven't purchased any quicksand content on DVDs in quite a while because I refuse to acquire SD media in a HD world. Were some of the current DVD collections available as HD (or 4K) clips on blu-ray, I would certainly purchase them. As is, I'm forced to rely on downloading clips. I'm in the camp that prefer physical media, and on the day some producer starts offering blu-ray content, I shall rejoice!

Please correct me if I am wrong but its my understanding that the actual media used to deliver video has nothing to do with its quality, except to the extent it limits resolution or file size. A traditional DVD is, of course, limited to standard definition but its not the DVD media itself. A DVD ROM is just a storage device. The same is true of a file delivered on a memory stick or on line. What ultimately determines the quality is the resolution (2k vs 4k) and the bit rate. The QD resolution does produce some enormous files but if one can download them that should not be an issue. Such files can then be stored on a hard drive or anything else one wishes to use.

That's just the point. Tremendous storage allows for tremendous data rates.

Blu-Ray represents more than three times the storage of DVD (both in terms of single and dual layer comparisons). This allows for rendering at 1920x1080 with negligible compression artifacts, assuming the run time of the content is typical (around 90 minutes).

The problem is that downloads of these discs would be cumbersome, and I have yet to come across a media player that will play the subsequent image files (VLC doesn't do Blu-Ray).

Little players like Apple and Adobe agree with you. Personally, I buck the trend. I like the increased permanence and reliability of physical media. I like the process of sorting thru a shelf filled with discs to decide what I want to see. I like menus and chapter markers. I like driving the film from across the room with a remote control from a comfy chair. I like watching on a full-sized TV with decent sound as opposed to a monitor less than 2 feet from my nose.
