Trivia - Frequent Runners

Postby Fred588 » Tue Oct 30, 2018 4:24 pm

Several people are known as having run for national office (President or Vice President) numerous times, but very few were really serious candidates. One, for example, was a candidate 9 times. But that person's name is not the answer here.

If we define a serious candidate as one who won at least once, what politician holds the record for running the most times? As a caveat, while I know of one correct answer to this I have not done the research to verify that there were no others.

Just to clarify one possible point of confusion. By "run" I mean the person was actually on the election day ballot. Having tried to get a nomination does not count.

I'm going to say it has to be Gus Hall or Harold Stassen.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

Stassen is the one who ran 9 times. Hall ran four times. But neither ever won so is not the answer.

If we're talking about people who got the nomination and won only once then I guess that would be Richard Nixon?

The question is who ran the most times and won AT LEAST once. And it covers running for president And/or Vice President.

Nixon was, I now realize, one of two correct answers. Nixon actually won four times (twice as President and twice as VP, and lost once running for President. There is another correct answer.
