Had a somewhat similar situation happen at work a few years ago. The boring test in our case went deep enough but the surveyor didn't notice the site was in a flood plain. The Caissons were hermetically sealed, so the first time the groundwater came up to it's true max depth they literally started to float and bobbed up out of the ground like giant steel corks. Oops.
Contractor ended up losing his ass on that one, only remedy was to start all over, re-bury them, then fill them with concrete to keep them in place.
