Salton Sea mud pots

Has anybody ever been to the Salton Sea mud pots? If so, what was it like?

I keep trying to get there but haven't made it yet, mud too deep to Jeep through once, vehicle wrecked on the way there once. It is a difficult place to get to and keeps getting more difficult as they've gated the road (see the URL below). There is alternative access via canoe or kayak across the pond to the south and there may even be a way to just walk to the large mud volcano on the east side of that pond.

Someone has posted that they've been there since Mullet Island was exposed but they didn't provide much in the way of useful information such as whether some of the mud pots are cooler than others or what the consistency of the mud is like. The mud volcano on the east side of the pond is certain to have a temperature gradient due to the water so it is best to bring some sort of boat so that you can focus on that mud volcano if the others are too hot.

Have scheduled a trip there twice already this year only to have the other person cancel. May try again in the next month or so, message me if you want to go.
