 I hate to reveal my secret recipe (though I think I've mention it on here before), but I use names of actresses, singers, TV personalities, etc. that I happen to like. That helps a lot, though I still see some inconsistences, especially in hair color/style/length, probably because they might change their hair from time to time. Another technique I've used is to find a good set of words for character traits that I want that produces some consistent results, and keep using it, which is what I did with this story: Fond Memories

Yes, I guess it's not a bad idea to take a little break once in a while, even if it's somewhat impromptu. Keeps things fresh and interesting.
