With older software, you're eventually going to need to create a virtual machine using whatever operating system it worked well with. You can build the virtual machine yourself or you can use tools provided by the virtual machine software to create the virtual machine for you from your physical machine, in which case you'll need to have your video editing software working correctly before performing the virtualization.

I have games and video editing software running on a Windows 2000 virtual machine and it performs the same as it did on the original Windows 2000 computer.

This is good advice. My brain has become rigid in some ways, to the point that this never occurred to me as I have been following this topic.

The concept may be a way to get some screen shots from the MPV BBS - which ran on a Windows 3.1 machine (and is backed up on Colorado Tape).

Thanks for the advice mudxdresser.

And also to Dave, for the helpful input.

It seems that I won't need to take such a radical step after all. I've downloaded a program called Photoscape X Pro, for a nominal sum and it reproduces almost all of the features that my old one, MGI Photosuite 4, used to have. I'm currently on vacation and writing this on my laptop. What I'm also doing, from time to time, is playing around with Photoscape, getting the hang of it and making myself familiar with how it all works.

If everything goes according to plan I should start posting QS fakes here, some time next month. Fingers crossed!

Thanks,

Redjak.

Dave, a lot of Windows 3.1 programs would run on Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows 2000. You might even want to try Windows 7 and work backward until you find what works...

The BBS software (of which I cannot recall the name) was installed on the 3.1 system, which itself was backed up on tape.

My recollection was that it was a DOS program that ran just fine in that environment - and could probably run in others. But the whole 'setup', not just the program, is what I would like to capture.

The fun thing to do is get some older hardware (with IDE support) and see if the tapes will play. IIRC, I have two (internal) drives as well as the tapes.

I recommend the VMWare Player for Windows systems, however, for DOS, DOSBox and VirtualBox are better as they come with DOS and give you better control over the screen display. When dealing with IDE drives, I use IDE to SATA converters,

Let me know if you ever want to do this and I'll build you an original Win 3.1 box from vintage hardware. We won't have to fake a thing.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.
