The Wild Thornberrys--Quicksand Scene (moved from Nuggets)

Postby wccncc » Sat Feb 01, 2025 11:50 am

So, I found a quicksand scene I'd been looking for the last couple of years and I finally grabbed some pics. Probably my favorite quicksand scene!

UltraWarriorX367,

It was towards the end of the episode "Rumble in the Jungle". It's a season 1 episode. Does anyone the best place to post images? I've tried uploading, but it's giving me an error.

Hmmm. Got lucky with this one.

I have a shitload of clips from tape that have never been rendered properly (file sizes used to be a thing), or never rendered at all. This scene is one of them.

The general problem with looking for specific scenes is that the capture library is not indexed. I looked though some photos of tape labels and found this on the third 'label'. Locating the capture was easy after that.

Yes, that's indeed the scene. Interesting to see what it would've looked like in the time it was originally broadcast or early reruns. My screencaps came from the Amazon Prime Video version.

If someone wants to grab it from there, we'll be happy to have that. I'm sure it's superior to this version (or at least it should be).

Standard definition NTSC broadcast TV was normally viewed at 480 lines of horizontal resolution. VHS tape was around 270 (S-VHS was 425). So when you see something rendered at 640x480 (4:3 aspect ratio), that '640' part is quite generous.

Standard definition NTSC broadcast TV looked ok back in its day. But now, anything 4:3 takes a back seat to anything 16:9. Broadcasters and/or content creators rarely go back and pull any footage from those days. It's mostly Youtubers that dabble in VHS recordings from the time. So it's easy to imagine that the original broadcast was vastly superior to what we have now from that time. My point is that is wasn't that much better.

I only spent some time thinking about this because I have looked for some excellent documentary series that were done in 4:3, on DVD - and there's nothing. The only Standard Definition stuff I see resurrected on DVD (and Blu Ray for the better audio) are concerts.

dlodoski,

Thanks for that explanation. I grew up in those days, so it's pretty nostalgic!

Despite being my favorite scene, I get the feeling it's kind of unrealistic. Anyone else think so?
