Gators......ditto......usually. I don't want to downplay the risk but I've done a lot of fishing/swimming/boating in FL when visiting family, and I've never seen one that didn't actively retreat from a noisy splashy human entering their environment. Only the REALLY huge ones, like 10-12 feet are big enough to consider humans prey.

ah well. i did go back and check out the area some more and it's a bust anyway. not getting anywhere without a boat

Two of the most successful 'explorers' I know of (one in Florida, the other in North Carolina) both use kayaks to get top their spots.

I doubt I will ever stop touting the benefits of approaching from the water. Chief among them is privacy and cleanup. I have used pretty much everything from canoes to a 70 foot house boat.

Well, laugh or not, but it's not just reptiles that can cause problems. Other animals too. While exploring the marshes around my city, I came across dogs several times. Once even angry. However, she had the good sense not to bite me (the dog was slightly larger than the chihuahua, and that was most likely because of the fur). But I've actually been lucky with dogs, and I mention it just as an opportunity. I mean about the birds. A joke is a joke, but beware of them! Personally, I've had no luck with them since I was a kid. (when I was a kid, my parents and my sister and I were vacationing in Anapa. And I was somewhat distracted from my parents. At the same time, my wand disappeared in my hands. And it just so happened that I passed by a tree with a crow's nest. And the crow attacked me. According to my parents, I've never run so fast. And this is just the beginning...). Once, going to my ash pits, after the winter, I made my way through the bushes (a more dreary path, but much shorter). And then the pigeons attacked me! I don't know where they came from. I thought they lived in the city, in attics. And then I had to go home, because those bastards scratched me! Then, a couple of weeks later, when I was already enjoying the mud, a seagull started attacking me. The truth is, I've already been able to punish the cheeky girl. I threw a piece of dirt and knocked it down. Then he shook her for several minutes. And as soon as he let go, she flew away like a bullet. And it seems that all this is a joke, but birds should also be feared. Especially if their nests or hunting area are nearby. A lot of them carry all sorts of trash, their claws are dirty. In addition, they clearly understand that it is necessary to punch in the eyes! So, we need to keep an eye on that, too.
