“Please,” Sarah whispered softly, her upturned face now almost level with the surface, her lucidity briefly reviving as her eyes flickered open again, “I can’t do this.” She inhaled shallowly as she bobbed precariously in the ooze, with only her head still visible above the quicksand. She glanced around herself as she floundered failingly in the quag, her muscles responding only slowly to her teetering brain’s commands to them to move, to fight, incredulous over the marshy menace in which she had so recklessly ensnared herself. How had this day –– for that matter, how had her life –– brought her to this? she wondered in utter disbelief as with each weakening breath she felt herself slipping further into the mire. Further. The word wafted tenuously through her wavering awareness. Just a little bit further, she had said to herself so surely, so confidently, only a few minutes before –– or had it now been a lifetime? She would jump one more time, she had promised herself, and then she would go on her merry way. Yes… her merry way. That’s what she would do… or, at least, that’s what she would have done… if there had been anything else that she could have done. The “dare spot” had obviously had other ideas.

I was playing with ChatGPT5 image generation to create some new AI quicksand images when the AI asked me if I would like for it to write some prompts of its own to carry the image that I was working on forward from the point of the woman being what I call upper-chest-deep to the point of her full submersion beneath the surface. These images are what the AI did with its own self-generated prompts which I have included; my only tweaks were to make the time of day be afternoon and not dusk (as the AI had originally suggested) so that the images would be brighter.

As you can tell, going from prompts to images the AI didn't always get the depths or the arm positions exactly right (it always wanted to picture the woman "higher" in the muck than the prompt called for), but overall it still did a very good job describing the appearance of the scene, the woman's actions (or lack thereof), and the emotional weight of the images that it generated, especially since this was originally the AI's idea.

The sinkhole had opened unexpectedly beneath her, plunging her several feet below the surface of the muddy ground upon which she had been walking. Once she had recovered from the initial shock of her predicament, she had taken momentary solace in the sight of the bright blue sky and puffy clouds still visible through the ragged opening above her... only to discover that the open space into which she had fallen was gradually collapsing upon itself around her, that the unstable, fluid earth encompassing her was just as treacherous, just as precarious as the seemingly solid ground that had betrayed her... and that it was slowly enclosing her... enfolding her... encasing her... as the opening above her grew steadily smaller.

Andrea wailed in helpless despair as she felt herself settling deeper into the quicksand, her hands and forearms pressing uselessly upon the unstable surface, the clutching muck encasing her torso and legs in a squeezing, suffocating grasp that made her efforts to move feel as though she were struggling against a vise grip of sentient suction, answering her every attempt to free herself by dragging her further downward into its depths.

The confident, educated, professional woman whom she had grown up to be was quickly vanishing from her consciousness, and in her absence Sarah felt as though she were regressing, reverting, devolving into a frightened little girl.
“No-oh-oh! I don’t want to be here! Oh-ohh-ohh!” she sobbed fearfully as she dragged her hands uselessly across the quicksand’s surface, her remaining composure dissolving into terrified, pitiable whimpering and weeping as the sucking muck drew her in deeper. “Help me!” she cried tearfully to the unfeeling forest around her...
... her swirling emotions over her plight finally resolving into anger and resentment as she began striking her arms against the mire, one after the other, repeatedly and forcefully to either side of herself in a tempestuous tantrum of childlike fury.
Something in the raw passion of that unbridled outburst brought the adult Sarah back from the brink of oblivion –– How dare the mud do this to me?! –– and with renewed determination she plunged her right arm and her left into the soppy surface before her and began pulling against it with all her might, groaning and growling vehemently through clenched teeth as she wrestled the bog in a final bid for freedom.
“Uuuuunnngh!... aaaaagggghh-ghah-haanh!... nooooo-oh-oh-ohh!” she demanded of every scrap of strength that she could muster from her fatiguing muscles, indignantly asserting her very being against fate itself and defying the quicksand to resist her will.
Unfortunately, the quicksand didn’t resist her at all as her arms and hands plowed loosely and easily through the flowing muck, grasping only ooze while her submerged form remained firmly trapped, and she came away with nothing for her momentous effort but another wasted expenditure of precious energy.

"DEPTH-OF-SINKING GUIDELINES"
I've been working with ChatGPT for the last month to generate AI quicksand images to illustrate various stories that I've written for the forum, and I've come to realize that I have to spell out in detail to the AI what it is that I want it to generate (often with the use of previously-created reference images). I think I've finally properly "taught" it the proper guidelines for various sinking depths; now the trick it to make sure that other requested elements of the images don't override the all-important depth-of-sinking guidelines. So far here's what I've been able to get it to do with varying degrees of success (don't worry whether the woman's facial expressions match the depth of her peril; getting the depth of her body right was the priority):
1. Waist deep
2. Chest deep/breast deep
3. Upper-chest deep
4. Armpit deep
5. Shoulder deep
6. Neck deep
7. Chin deep
8. Mouth deep
9. Nose deep
10. Eye deep
I'll post additional depth-of-sinking images tomorrow as she continues sinking to her doom.

"MORE DEPTH-OF-SINKING GUIDELINES"
Following up on yesterday's post about my experiments with ChatGPT and depth guidelines, here are a few more examples of what I've worked out with it:
1. Face deep
2. Forehead deep
3. Crown deep
4. Hair deep
5. Full submersion
6. Hands only (clean and mud-covered)
I wish that I could say that it was simply a matter of plugging in these requested depth levels and getting consistent results, but that only holds if I keep the prompts simple. Once I start adding additional features such as hand/arm placement and positioning the image generator tends to want to "float" her higher in the quicksand that the prompt calls for, so the AI and I and still working through the details.
As a bonus that has nothing to do with depth guidelines, the other day I played with seeing how well ChatGPT could do with creating definitionally "impossible" images of above-the-surface/beneath-the-surface views of a woman in quicksand so that her submerged body is also visible without at the same time making it look like she's merely standing in extremely clear water. After several rounds of experimentation these seemed to be the best of the bunch:
