Only just noticed this, Max.

I'm not a big football fan (F1 for me) but I was delighted with the way England played and conducted themselves, while being disappointed and disgusted with the cynical foul play of the Argentinian team. But the highlight for me was the England vs France match with ten goals. A real treat! :D

I'm not particularly interested in football, I went off the game in the early 1970's when it supposedly became more "professional" and cheating got referred to as "professional fouls". After that I stuck to watching rugby. That said, it was difficult to avoid the coverage (I managed to miss most of it though). From what I heard/saw England seemed to do better than their skill and play merited and third place is a bit surprising. On the third place playoff, I'd say this: in football goals are supposed to be fiercely contested and hard won, if a game results in ten goals it is a clear indication that neither team could give a toss anymore and most kick arounds in the park would be more competitive. Regarding the attitude of the Argentinian players, we have come to expect this, particularly in games against England.

What they call "professionalism" has pretty much ruined sorts for me. However, ALL the teams and players have a right to be proud of what they have accomplished, whether they came in first of forty-eighth. I played waterpolo in college and we got trounced by the the Mexican Olympic team (22 to 5) on its way to the Olympic Games in Munich. Looking back on it, it would not have mattered if it was 50 to 0 - we got to play!
