My family knows how much I really enjoy cycling and hiking through the backcountry, and I sometimes show them the odd photo I had taken of a flower, a rabbit, a grouse, etc. 8-) I have been hiking through the backcountry since I was a little kid back in the 70's, and want to keep up my activities for as long as my body lets me! :)

My August 18'th, 2026 Adventure, Part 1!

After a disappointing year with only one outing with the mud exposed briefly in the main bog before sinking under the water with my two sinks that day, and staying submerged for the other two outings (I did find a tiny hole with thick mud exposed that I could squeeze into just north of the bog that I took advantage of), I wasn't certain if the flooding was going to be worse this year, given the trend the past couple years, even with hot dry weather. :? But finally, on Tuesday, August 18'th, one week later than my first 2025 adventure, I was finally ready to have my first adventure of the season! :D It was a long hot summer, so I kept my fingers crossed, in hopes that perhaps the mud could be exposed this time. But, the month had been marred by wildfire smoke, which filtered the sun at times. :x However, on the day of the bikeride, the skies were free of smoke, although there were some morning cloud that was forecast to clear away as the day progressed. :) Because of the wildfire/drought situation, the back country was off limits to offroad vehicles, such as atv's and motorbikes, which meant that things should be very quiet on my sideroad, with lots of privacy! 8-)

My brother dropped me off at my usual spot some time after 10:30 am, with the truck's display reading a temperature there of 21˚C (70˚F), with it only warming up from there! 8-) I was happy to see no signs of cattle, although the cowpies in the dropoff area didn't look a year old, but still weren't fresh. Once I tested my bike to make certain it was in good shape after the trip up there on constant washboard road surface, my brother left and I packed my stuff up in my saddlebags. Then, two trucks with huge livestock trailers pulled up in the same dropoff spot, to drop off cattle! Briefly talking with one person, it turned out that the cattle were released earlier, but returned home, and so they had to bring the animals back up again. Anyways, I then headed on to my destination.

I went up the sideroad, and when I passed by the east pond, I noticed what looked like a small patch of mud exposed on the northwest shoreline! :) That pond never had anything exposed, which gave me hope for my pond/bog! I was able to take a path to the sidetrail again instead of crawling under a large fallen tree, because a log on the embankment that I always found awkward to lift my bike over was gone! :) I parked my bike in its usual spot, and swapped memory cards in my camera. I headed straight to the pond without taking my other things, except for some Powerade, because I wanted to travel light and check the status of things first. :)

The grass was well trampled from cattle, with lots of signs of recent bovine activity/grazing. When I got closer to the northern part of the western shore of the pond, I noticed something very promising! :) The lower muddy parts of the grassy meadow that were usually flooded were exposed! I took a photo of it at 10:56 am:

Heading further southward, I stopped to take another photo of exposed mud on the edge of the pond! I was really getting hopeful! :)

When I finally reached my destination, I was delighted to see that the mud was not only exposed, but it was not surrounded by water, and looked nice and thick! :D I removed my shoes and headed to the bog to take photos:

My August 18'th, 2026 Adventure, Part 2 (Click Here For The Beginning With More Pix)!

Now, shortly after 11 am, it was the moment I had been waiting for, for a very, VERY long time! :D I immediately stripped down, and also took my glasses off so they wouldn't get splattered with mud. I headed straight to the west side of the bog, crossed between the sticks, and stood on the edge of the floating vegetation. Then, I took my fateful leap onto the west side of the bog, which then quickly gulped me down past my waist! :D It was such an intoxicating feeling, for the first time this year being slowly sucked down by soft, cushiony ground that quivered and farted around me, thicker than it has been the last two years! :D I struggled up to my shoulders, just loving how I was being held by the thick doughy mire! I churned the surface, and really savoured the experience I had missed for so long! It had a slightly stiffer layer over the softer gooier stuff underneath! Then, I worked myself up higher, turned to face towards the west shoreline, leaned forward, and struggled with my lower abdomen cradled in the thicker surface layer, experiencing the most explosive stimulation I have had in over a year! :D

I mushed up some of the weeds around that side a little before working myself out, pushing the mud off my body into the bog. I had to leave the rest of the bog pristine for the dramatic video I was planning for in the afternoon! So, I then cleaned up in the water, using yellow waterlily rhizomes to sit on. The water was slightly cool, but disturbing the sediment released cooler water as well. It was a gradual process cleaning, also using the weeds on the edge as "Nature's scrub brush" for my back before swishing water over my back to rinse it off. Once I got myself clean, I air-dried, and then got dressed, feeling a bit on the chilled side. It was after 12 noon, so it was time for lunch. But first, starting at 12:04 pm, I took some photos of where the ground had given way beneath my feet!

I then decided to take a walk to the south end of the pond, to check out what was exposed there, and finding some patches of exposed mud. Towards the south end, I had to be careful where I stepped, because in between the raised tufts of grass was fragile ground that could easily swallow a leg! I took a few photos:

I then headed to the tiny pond at the south end of the clearing, north of the beaver dike and exiting seasonal stream. I took a couple of photos there:

My August 18'th, 2026 Adventure, Part 3, The Conclusion (Click Here For The Beginning With More Pix)!

I returned to my things, put my shoes back on, returned to my bike, grabbed my lunch and Powerade, and took a walk up the sideroad to help me warm up. I went past the pond to the north with the ring bog. I could see that the stream leaving it was mostly free of water with mud exposed, but the pond itself looked full with not much in the way of mud exposed, as far as I could see from the south side, except for some shallow black stuff trampled by cattle on the southwest edge. I walked further up the sideroad, until I started to feel warm. Then, I headed back, finishing snacking on a couple of Pizza Pops and an almond Sweet & Salty bar. By the time I got back to my bike, I was feeling warm and ready for my second sinking session of the day, this time on video! :D

I grabbed my bag of things and returned to my bog, setting things down in the usual area among the alders. I got out my swim goggles, swim cap, Gorillapod, and junk shorts. When I changed into the shorts, I once again had to use a string as a belt because the elastic in the waist was so stretched. I set my camera's picture size to 16:9 (10.5M 4320x2432) to match the video's aspect ratio (but not resolution) to properly frame the location of interest. I pulled out one of my sticks from the cage and tried to poke it through a weak spot in the grass on the south side, but the stick was brittle and broke. I tried a different one, but it seemed as though the Gorillapod had trouble gripping onto it. Perhaps it was too thin. :? After a bit of fiddling around, I decided to mount the camera/Gorillapod on the west side, on one of the other cage sticks already set into the ground. Once I had the camera mounted, and was able to successfully test-zoom it to properly frame the pristine ground between the churned-up stuff in front and the grass in the back, I then returned to my things. I put on my swim cap and put my swim goggles on my forehead, to be moved down over my eyes once I had re-zoomed the camera and started the video. I started waiting for the sun to come out from behind a cloud, which had just started to cover the sun, after the sun being out for much of the day, with the exception of the morning. Finally, I decided to not to wait any longer and to proceed with my video. With the area of interest properly framed and zoomed in, I pressed the record button at 1:59 pm, heard the beep, and was ready to begin my first dramatic sinking/submergence video of the season, this one with the theme "Starving Ground"! :D This is the framed view:

2026 08 18 1Q Crescent.jpg

I walked around to the east side of the bog, and then started making my usual monologue "thinking out loud" part to set up the scene, before finally taking that fateful leap, with the voracious quagmire gulping me down to my waist! I slowly sunk to my chest before finally pushing my hands/arms down, breaking the thicker surface layer, the hungry muck closing over them. I struggled with my arms "stuck" beneath the surface, slowly sinking deeper and deeper, the darker gooey muck underneath contrasting with the lighter, slightly firmer, surface layer. As the doughy ooze rose up to my head, I laid my head back, with the sucking ooze rising higher around its sides! As the treacherous morass started to get close to touching my eyes, I suddenly realized that I had forgot to pull down my swim goggles! :x So, I got my hands/arms "unstuck", wiped the mud off each other, pulled the swim goggles over my eyes, and let the voracious ooze claim my arms/hands again. With the swim goggles protecting my eyes, I was able to continue getting swallowed by the starving ground, with my view of the sky through the goggles getting closed in with soft, doughy darkness! When the suffocating ooze closed over my nose and mouth, I had to start digging the batterlike mire away from my mouth to breathe again briefly, before it oozed closed again, forcing me to dig it away again for some brief breaths before the smothering mire sucked closed again. I was in total bliss! :D It felt sooooo goooooood to linger there just below the surface, feeling the soft quagmire completely surrounding my body and encompassing my head, constantly digging away the muck that repeatedly kept oozing back over my mouth, that I wanted to stay like that forever! :D But, I was doing a dramatic sinking video, so I had to finish my submergence. So, I took a deep breath and pulled myself down deeper, paused for a moment, and then let out some air to hiss to the surface.

With the submergence scene finished, it was time to re-emerge! So, I worked myself up higher, dug the ooze away from my mouth, and took in a deep breath, only to get a mouthful of tasteless mud instead, like a mouthful of well-whipped & creamed mashed potatoes! Apparently, the softer, oozier mud from beneath the thicker top layer was brought up to the surface with my head when I was resurfacing, and I was clearly not high enough for that soft consistency of the muck, only for if it all had the consistency of the top layer! :x My mouth was so full, that when I tried spitting it out, some of it was too far back in my mouth, and wound up being swallowed! In addition to constantly spitting, I tried to force myself to cough and tried a "forced gag" to try and get the mud in the back of my mouth out! But the residual mud stuck to the back of the roof of my mouth, clinging there like a gritty peanut butter, only being able to be touched by the back of my tongue with no way of pushing it forward, and was eventually swallowed too. I was concerned about what kinds of microbes or other things were in the mud that I had ingested, and hoped that I wouldn't get sick! But, anyways, I continued working myself higher up out of the mire, wiping the mud from my body as I went. I turned around, pulled myself closer to shore, and then turned around again to work myself the rest of the way out, pushing the mud off my body as I went, sitting on the grass on the edge as I extracted my legs and feet and scraped the mud off them, back into the bog. I then headed to the water to quickly clean my hands and arms, and then returned to stop the video and turn off the camera, briefly lifting my swim goggles to see better.

Now, it was time to get cleaned off. This time the water felt warmer thanks to the sun, which was coming in and out from behind the cloud during the video. Since I was muddy from head to toe, I had to submerge myself in the water, which was shallow. I did all the usual stuff, including using the floating vegetation as "Nature's Scrub Brush" to loosen the muddy film, and splashing water over my back to clean it off there. I cleaned my swim goggles and swim cap, setting them on some yellow waterlily leaves on shore, and removed my junk shorts, this time not having trouble removing the string. I briefly exited the pond and placed them all on some alder branches further inland, before returning to the water to finish cleaning off. Then I air-dried, walking around further away from the pond to a part of the meadow past a patchy line of alders, where it was drier, since there was more heat radiating from dry ground than from wet ground.

All dry, I got dressed and after changing the camera's picture size back to 4:3 (14M 4320x3240), took some photos of my bog, starting at 3:04 pm, now with two disturbed spots:

2026 08 18 1R Crescent.jpg

2026 08 18 1S Crescent.jpg

Now, I was all chilled again, and had to wait to warm up before having my third sinking session of the day, where I would mush up all of the surface and the weeds to keep them from taking over. While I was waiting, I headed to the north side of the pond, taking some more photos of the exposed mud:

2026 08 18 1U Crescent.jpg

2026 08 18 1V Crescent.jpg

2026 08 18 1W Crescent.jpg

Once again, I decided to go for one final walk up the sideroad again, past the same pond with the ring bog, and once I started to warm up again I turned around. On the way back, I headed down to the south end of the ring bog pond to take a closer look at it, where the cattle had trampled a black muddy patch on the shore there. On the eastern part further away, I couldn't tell if there was some mud exposed between the main shore and the ring bog, or if it was just algae. :? It appeared to be just algae, and I could see just water to the distant shoreline of the center pond to the north. I headed back to the road and returned to my bog location for my final sinking session!

I got undressed, and the first thing I did was head over to the north side, and plopped myself down on the narrow section of undisturbed mud that was between my first and second sinks. Laying horizontally and facing south, I plunged my arms down into the bottomless softness and struggled, feeling the front of my body being cradled as it rose up my sides. I bent my knees a bit, and struggled, feeling the doughy ooze licking over my rear and around my lower back! As my chin started to press down into the surface of the suffocating mire, my stimulation reached the exploding point for the second time this day! :D

Since I was muddy on my front up to my chin, I had thought about cleaning off in the water before mushing up the mud, but decided that I might get too chilled. So, I decided to just get down to business! I mushed the mud in front of me, on the south side, before getting up and mushing the mud both in the middle and around me on the north side. I then worked my way clockwise, mushing up the mud and pushing all the weeds under the surface. It was so thick in most spots that I had to work myself out and then walk around the edge to the next spot and then take the plunge. Sometimes I was able to work my legs forward as well to move through it, digging mud from the front of me and pushing it behind me to get to the edge. I also smoothed the surface as I went. When I reached the south side, I was starting to feel a little bit chilled, which I attributed to the fact that it was being shaded by the grass, so it didn't get all the sun. :? Also, I noticed that the shadow of one of the trees to the west was over the south half of the bog, which didn't help either. Once I got the south side mushed and smoothed out, I worked to smooth out other parts that seemed to be uneven. All the time, I kept myself up around just past waist deep, to reduce the chilled feeling, the mud higher up my front drying up on my skin.

Wanting to spend some more time lingering in the mire to savour the experience, I first worked myself out, pushing the mud off my body as I went, cleaned my hands off in the pond, and went to check the time, although I was wondering if it would be a mistake walking up my path all muddy. :? I checked the time, and it was some time around 5 pm, and I felt that I did have enough time for one final limited sink! :D

From the north side, I jumped into the middle, landing waist deep, and faced myself westward as I lingered, repeatedly working myself back up each time the batterlike ooze sucked me down deeper! I was feeling constantly mildly chilled, but the feel of the bog was winning out. 8-) I was first in the shade, but the shadow was moving away, and eventually, I was in the half-shade, and then back in the full sun again! :) But then, another shadow started to reach the north side of the bog, at which point, I decided to call it quits! So, I worked myself through the mire, working my legs slowly forward, until I got close to the north side, where I was able to pull myself closer. Then, I turned around and pulled myself right up to the shore, and then after lifting myself up slightly, I let go and loved the feel of myself slowly sinking back into the ooze. Finally, I worked myself all the way out, pushing the mud off my body back into the bog. I was also smoothing out the surface of the mire during my escape from the center as well.

Now, it was time to clean off one final time. But this time, I had to scrub the front of my body from the chin down to my waist harder, since the mud had dried on. I noticed that where the mud had dried on my skin, there was a bit of a rash, something that I had forgotten about whenever mud dried on my skin. I went through the usual cleanup routine, before heading to shore to dry off. But, once I was dry, when I headed back to my things, I felt something wet, and noticed mud smeared on my right leg/hip! :x It turned out that when I checked the time earlier, some mud brushed off onto a bush and I now had to return to the water to wash it off! :x Once I dried myself again, I returned to my things, avoiding the muddy branches on the north side of the path. I got dressed, and starting at 5:48 pm, took a couple of photos of my bog:

2026 08 18 1X Crescent.jpg

2026 08 18 1Y Crescent.jpg

I sat down and watched my video on my camera before I was ready to prepare to leave. I switched memory cards in my camera and gathered my stuff together, retrieving my swim goggles, swim cap and junk shorts, having to return back to the alder tree to get the string as well. Most went into my bag except for my junk shorts, which were wet. I headed back to my bike, put my stuff away, having to put my junk shorts separately in the saddlebag with my drinks. Then I was off, snacking on a Sweet & Salty bar while on the main road, which was annoyingly full of washboard. I had just begun to head down the main hill a little ways when my brother drove up. It turned out he decided to leave at a time he knew I would be heading back, and so I was able to end my bikeride without coasting all the way down the hill and rattling my neck.

Overall it was quite a wonderful day, with better mud conditions than I had over the previous two years! :D I was so glad to have finally enjoyed my first submergence sink of the season! :D Looking at the state of my bog, it looked like I could have started my adventures a few weeks earlier after all! But then, I was trying to get a certain amount of weeding done on the farm, and figured that it wouldn't be until early to mid August before it would be exposed, like in the previous years. I never had any ill effects from swallowing the mud, and I did have a small leech on me during cleanup (first?). I may have had some tinier baby leeches as well that rolled up into tiny dustlike balls. I had hoped that skipping most of the descent would make things easy on my neck. But, unfortunately, over the following days, it started to crunch and felt a little bit sensitive, with some soreness from muscles for several days, giving way to more intermittent soreness deeper in, with the crunching going on, even after a week, not looking like it would go away completely before my next bikeride! I just kept my fingers crossed, hoping that it wouldn't be an issue next time, and looked forward to my next adventure! 8-)

My August 26'th, 2026 Adventure, Part 1!

After my previous adventure, I was concerned about a rainstorm that had dropped half an inch of rain, and hoped that my bog wasn't going to have any water on top. :? It looked like the heat was going to peak on Wednesday, August 26'th, so that was the day I was targeting for my second adventure of the season! 8-) But, even though there was also a forecast of mix of sun and cloud with a chance of thunderstorms in the late afternoon that day, I had to take advantage of the warm weather before it was gone!

My brother dropped me off in the usual spot around 11 am, and the temperature reading there was 22˚C (72˚F), slightly warmer than last time! :) There was no sign of cattle around, and I took my bike for a test run to make certain nothing happened to the bike during the rough trip up the washboard road, bouncing in the back of the truck. It all checked out fine, and my brother took off, and I loaded my things in my saddlebags, and was on my way! :D

I parked my bike in the usual wooded spot, north of the pond, swapped memory cards in the camera, got my stuff together and headed off to my bog, to see if the rain had affected it. When I reached it, I was happy to see that it was free of water, but it did look like it had some temporary puddling, which smoothed out the lower parts of the surface. :D I headed to the alders where I set my things down, took off my shoes and lower clothes, and returned to the bog to take photos of it from four sides, starting at 11:19 am:

2026 08 26 2A Crescent.jpg

2026 08 26 2B Crescent.jpg

2026 08 26 2C Crescent.jpg

2026 08 26 2D Crescent.jpg

Now, with the photos taken, I was anxious to have my first session of getting sucked (not all the way because things weren't quite warm enough) into the mire, followed by mushing up all of the surface to eliminate the firmer surface layer! I returned to my things, put my camera away, finished undressing, and was ready to step into the "ground that has no bottom"!

Entering from the west side facing east, I took my fateful leap, landing waist deep in the farting muck! :D I was happy to see that it was thicker than last time, even with all the rain we had :D I struggled and mushed up the doughy surface around me, loving its feel on my body, sinking deeper towards my chest. The surface in front of me undulated with my struggles, the mire sucking me down towards my chest, the imagined threat of being sucked down to my death, and the heavenly feeling of it, stimulating me to the exploding point! :D

Now, it was time to mush up the surface! I finished mushing everything around me that I could reach, before moving on to the next part. I chose to do the south side first, since it was shaded more from the grass and was therefore cooler. So, I wanted to save the warm side of the bog for last. 8-) I worked myself around the bog counterclockwise, finding that because it was thicker, I had to work myself out and move around to the next section and then stepping in. I had to work myself to the surrounding weeds backwards, and move mud from behind me to in front of me to keep it from bunching up and being pushed onto the surrounding grass. I also picked out small pieces of wood as well and tossing them away. I loved how the bog felt and how it would fart out swamp gas! The mud was at a point where it was so thick that I could hardly work my legs through it anymore, but was still too soft to work myself high enough to sit back on top of the mud and work my legs out and crawl out on top. It was of that consistency that made escape a bit more slow going, but for the inexperienced, perhaps perceived to be impossible! So, I enjoyed all the struggling to get out each time I had to move to the next spot for the surface mushing and smoothing! :D Once I had finished going full circle, I worked myself out backwards, pushing mud off my body into the bog, and smoothed out the surface!

Now that I finished the mushing up and smoothing out of the surface, I stood on the north side of the bog which had no more thicker surface layer, and took a leap right into the center, landing past my waist in the gulping mire! I then struggled and slowly sunk down, but kept on working myself back up towards my stomach. I had been feeling a bit chilled, but not too bad. The sun had been going in and out from behind the clouds, with me feeling a bit cool when the clouds covered the sun :x , but the moment the sun came out, it was absolutely baking! :D I imagined that the mire was unsurvivable, and that no matter how much I struggled to keep from sinking, the deadly muck would eventually win out! I just lingered there, trying to stay stomach deep, loving the experience! :D Finally, I started struggling, and the voracious ooze started to suck me down deeper towards my chest, with me imagining that this was it, the bog was finally going to suck me under, that I was now about to become its latest victim, causing me to explode for the second time this day! :D

Now it was time to bring my first mud session of the day to an end. I worked myself up as high as I could, which was around stomach deep, and then slowly worked myself backwards towards the north edge, pulling mud from behind me to in front of me, and working myself backward inch by slow inch, repeating the process, while also smoothing the surface in front of me! It took a while, but once I was able to move the last of the mud behind me to my front and get my rear against the edge of the floating vegetation, I was able to push my hands down on the grass and lift myself up higher to finally sit on something solid! :) I worked my legs and feet out and pushed the mud off them and into the bog, and finished the smoothing of the surface, making certain that if I had dragged any mud onto the grass that it would also be returned to the bog!

Now it was time to head into the water to get cleaned up! Because I didn't get too deep yet, I was able to clean myself off a bit more easily without needing to rub my back on "Nature's Scrub Brush". But I did have to rub my skin a bit harder, because the thicker mud left thicker patches of darker scum on my skin. The water felt a little bit on the cool side because it was still early in the day, but still was not too bad. However the water from the sediment that I stirred up was a bit cooler, forcing me to try and swish nearby warmer surface water towards me. The yellow waterlily rhizomes to sit or kneel on helped things quite a bit. I slowly got myself clean from top down, and then exited the water to air-dry off.

Once I was nice and dry, I got dressed, grabbed my camera, and took some photos of my mushed up and smoothed out bog, starting at 1:54 pm:

My August 26'th, 2026 Adventure, Part 2 (Click Here For The Beginning With More Pix)!

I headed back to my bike, putting my shoes on when I was certain that my feet were dry. Waiting to warm up, I grabbed my lunch and drinks, and walked back to the sideroad, where I walked northward, further up it to where it went around the west and north sides of the clearing containing the pond with the ring bog with a large meadow on its north side, all of which was hidden from the road by a forest, except for a few tiny places, one being the beaver dike on the south side east of the road which I had briefly walked down to last time. It is basically a deep pond surrounded by a ring of mostly solid grassy sphagnum peat bog, which is in turn surrounded by shallower water. It looks like this from the air: https://maps.app.goo.gl/cWeQVMKNQTSZHZcy8 . I snacked on a couple of Pizza Pops on the way, as well as an almond Sweet & Salty bar. Where the road went around the north side of the ring bog, there was a narrow clear grassy corridor through the trees that led to the large meadow on the north side of the ring bog pond. Once I had finished lunch, I decided to head through that entrance and cross the meadow to check out the north side of the ring bog pond to see if it had mud exposed, because years ago, during a dry summer, there was a lot of mud exposed in the northern section outside the sphagnum ring bog, and I didn't have time to test it out back then.

When I crossed the meadow and approached the north side of the pond, I was excited to see that the water was almost completely gone from that outer section, exposing extensive mudflats full of yellow waterlilies! :D It is this dark area above the center pond: https://maps.app.goo.gl/NKJ2hmS9y8S2kjJB7 I couldn't resist taking a number of photos of the mudflats, starting at 2:33 pm:

I headed to the east side, and continued with my photos:

I walked southward, around to a low, more solid grassy spot where I was able to cross over to the grassy sphagnum ring bog to take photos of the mudflats from the south side:

My August 26'th, 2026 Adventure, Part 3 (Click Here For The Beginning With More Pix)!

I finally reached a spot on the ring bog that had a channel of water I couldn't jump over, so I couldn't go any further, and therefore had to take the rest of the photos from the one spot:

2026 08 26 2R Ring Bog Pond.jpg

2026 08 26 2S Ring Bog Pond.jpg

2026 08 26 2T Ring Bog Pond.jpg

2026 08 26 2U Ring Bog Pond.jpg

While I was headed westward along the ring bog taking pictures, there was a narrow channel of water crossing it in the middle eastern part, which I jumped across heading west, with my left foot landing on lower floating vegetation at the west edge of the channel, getting my left shoe wet. :x This time, when heading back, I tried to be more careful, and jumped across, but when I landed on the other side, my left foot slipped on the east edge, and right into the water, REALLY soaking my left shoe this time, as well as getting some peat on my left leg! :x

I headed back through the meadow, back the way I came, back to the road, and returned to my bike, putting my lunch bag away, and returned to my bog, finally warm enough for me to have my second submergence video of the season! :D This time, the theme of the video I settled on was "Gulping, Gobbling Goop"!

On the way to the bog, I stopped at a rock outcropping in the meadow west of the pond, and picked up a nice thick solid stick, which looked like the perfect size for the Gorillapod to wrap its tentacles around! :) At my things by my bog, I got out the Gorillapod, the swim goggles and cap, and my junk shorts and string to use as a belt. I changed into my junk shorts, and set my camera's picture size to 16:9 aspect ratio (10.5M 4320x2432) so that I could get the location properly framed for the video. I stuck the stick/pole into the floating grass on the south side of my bog, and wrapped the tentacles of the Gorillapod with my camera screwed on around the pole, and it was more secure than using the thinner sticks I was using as a cage. 8-) I then figured out where I was going to land, and tried to get the camera's view properly centered. But, unfortunately, because of my eyesight problems, I had trouble seeing the screen clearly in the sun, and even when I tried shading it, I still couldn't see the details of the surface. :? So, I decided to try something I had previously thought about. I went to the pond, removed an oval-shaped leaf from a floating pondweed, and dropped it on the bog, roughly where I was to take the plunge. But, when I looked at the screen, I still couldn't make it out! :x So, after a while of trying to locate it, I returned to the edge of the pond and took a yellow, crumpled, dried-up piece of yellow waterlily leaf, and then dropped it on the bog, with it landing just northwest of the pondweed leaf. I returned to my camera, and was able to make out that dry leaf, and was finally able to get the spot properly framed! :D

2026 08 26 2V Crescent.jpg

I returned to my things, got my swim cap on, put my swim goggles on my forehead until I was ready, lifted up the edges of the cap to expose my ears so I could put my glasses back on, and returned to my camera to make a few final adjustments to get it centered and zoomed in properly. Then, at 3:24 pm I then hit the record button, made certain it was recording, returned to my things, set my glasses down, pulled the swim cap back over my ears, and put my swim goggles over my eyes, something I forgot about a ways into the video last time! I was now ready to begin my dramatic on-camera sink and escape! :D

I walked over to the north side of the bog, and as usual, did my "thinking out loud" part to set up the "Gulping, Gobbling Goop" theme before taking the fateful leap, thinking that the leaves were off-center, so I decided to target a spot just to the left side of them on the video (right side from my perspective). The voracious ooze gulped me down to my waist, and I began to struggle, slowly sinking deeper and deeper, as I repeatedly tried reaching for anything solid, turning the surface to mush around me, with swamp gas occasionally farting out! It was slow going, because of how thick the muck was, and I had to pace myself, because I didn't want to be out of breath for the submergence part. It felt really good being engulfed by thick, doughy quagmire! :D The sun was going in and out from behind the clouds, and I was concerned about the sun in my eyes while it was out. However, I was facing slightly to the east of the sun. I also picked out a tiny stick and tossed it away. I continued to enjoy getting deeper and deeper in the thick comfy muck, which closed over my shoulders and slowly rose up around the sides of my head, forcing me to tilt my head further and further back to keep my mouth and nose exposed! Eventually, I was peering through a puffy hole with sides that slowly billowed closed over my eyes, enclosing them in muddy darkness, and as it started to smother my mouth, I had to work my hands up to the surface and dig away the suffocating ooze so that I could keep on breathing. I did that for a bit, before finally taking a deep breath, holding it, and going the rest of the way under, with my hands following! I struggled a bit beneath the surface before pausing, and then finally letting out some of my breath, hearing it escape to the surface!

After the exhalation, my lungs were screaming for air, so I quickly worked myself back up to the surface, this time making sure I was up high enough to wipe away the mud from my mouth to breathe without it closing over my mouth at the critical moment of inhalation! After wiping the mud away, I was really gasping for air, and with my head rising up out of the mire, I had to pause to finish catching my breath! Now was the beginning of the long slow process of working myself up higher and higher, pushing the mud off my body as I went. When I got around waist deep in the sticky ooze, I couldn't get much higher, and began the longer slower process of working myself backwards, pulling mud from behind me to in front of me, and then smoothing out the surface in front of me. I kept on repeating that until I finally reached the edge, where I was finally able to push down on the grass with my hands to lift my butt out and onto the grass, making certain I wasn't dragging any mud onto the grass with me. I then worked my legs and feet out, pushing the mud back into the bog, before finally smoothing it out.

I headed to the water, quickly cleaned my hands and arms, returned to the camera, pressed the record button to stop the recording, turned the camera off, and headed into the pond to clean up. I had to head out a little further into the pond and wait for the disturbed sediment to settle a bit, which also released colder water, which I had to swish away to replace it with warmer surface water from further in front of me. I then leaned forward until my mouth was close to the surface of the water and had to wait to catch my breath before submerging my head and neck to clean them off. I was glad the water temperature wasn't too bad at this time. 8-) I removed my swim goggles and cleaned my face as well, and had to scrub myself harder this time due to the mud leaving patches of darker film on my skin. I cleaned my arms and front as much as possible to get it clean. I removed my swim cap and cleaned it as well, and set it and the goggles, which I also cleaned, on a yellow waterlily leaf on shore. I rubbed my back vigorously on the floating vegetation ("Nature's Scrub Brush"), with the action making audible rubbing sounds like a squeegee, a sign that I was doing a good job of cleaning my back. 8-) Then, it was back into the water to splash water over my shoulders and down my back to rinse away the debris. I went to remove the junk shorts, but the slip knot I used got stuck, so I had to pull the shorts out from under the string, before cleaning it up. I eventually got the knot undone, and removed the string from around my waist as well. After I cleaned myself down to my legs and feet, I took my junk shorts (which I wrung out as much as I could), swim goggles and cap, and string, and hung them on some dead alder branches. But, when I was ready to air-dry, it started to shower! :x I needed to dry out, but now I was being sprinkled on from the sky! :x But fortunately, it was light and didn't last long, and I got myself nice and dry.

I got dressed, and took some photos, starting at 4:51 pm, of the treacherous ooze that made for a dramatic sinking scene:

My August 26'th, 2026 Adventure, Part 4, The Conclusion (Click Here For The Beginning With More Pix)!

Now, it was time for me to put my things away and head back to my bike. I was concerned about the "warning shower" (actually I think there were two "warning showers"), a sign of more things to come as the day got later! :? I gathered my stuff in my spot in the bushes near the bog, and then after one last look at my bog, I headed to where I had my other things hanging from the dead alder branches, and put the swim goggles, swim cap and string into the bag, but couldn't put them back in their packaging yet, because they were still a little wet. I kept the junk shorts outside the bag because it was still so wet.

During the trip back to my bike, I started to wonder if perhaps I still had more time to do things after all. :? Looking to the south, the clouds looked like they were clearing away, and I couldn't see any more showers approaching! :) So, I figured that this could be an opportunity to finally test out the extensive mudflats exposed on the north side of the ring bog pond, something I had wished I had done a number of years ago, the last time I noticed the mud exposed, although back then, there wasn't as much mud exposed as there was now! :D

So, after I walked my bike back to the sideroad, instead of heading south to leave, I headed north, to the ring bog! :D Where the road turned east north of the ring bog, I walked my bike up a side trail on the north side of the road, and dropped it off where it was hidden from the road. I grabbed my stuff, and headed to the grassy entrance to the north side of the meadow that was on the north side of the ring bog pond, looking forward to walking though the yellow waterlily-laden mud flats, with the results captured on video! :D When I reached the mud flats, I picked a pair of bushes on the north edge of the bog as my starting point. I then walked around to the east side and around to the grassy sphagnum ring bog that was between the deeper center pond and the mudflats, breaking off and carrying a large stick from the bushes on the edge of the forest on the east side along the way, to provide something for my Gorillapod to wrap its tentacles around (can't remember if I did that on my way or if I dropped my other things off on the ring bog and then came back for the stick). I selected my exit point, and then stuck the stick through the grass on the south edge of the mudflats. I set the camera's picture size back to 16:9 aspect ratio again, screwed on the Gorillapod, and mounted the camera on the stick with the Gorillapod's knobby tentacles. I changed into my junk shorts again, which were still wet from earlier, wore no swim goggles or cap because I wasn't submerging, and got the view of my path properly framed by the camera:

2026 08 26 2ZA Ring Bog Pond.jpg

All set, I pressed the record button at 5:45 pm, and headed around the mud flats over to the two bushes, where I finally made my entrance! :D When I crossed the mud flat towards the camera, it was thicker on the edge, but then quickly became a vigorously bubbling slurry around calf to thigh deep lying over top a mat of yellow waterlily roots with submerged rhizomes rising up above the mat of roots. Below the mat of roots was peaty mud that was stiffer and thicker. I had to walk carefully, so as not to trip on the uneven surface. One step would be thigh deep in the slurry on top of the stiffer peaty root-laden mud, the next calf deep in the slurry on top of a rhizome, and the next would be thigh deep again on the roots and stiffer peaty mud. I reached the south side with the camera, a bit disappointed that the bubbling slurry never got any deeper than close to the top of my legs. I got out, cleaned the mud off my hands in the middle pond, and then pressed the record button to end the recording. I then turned the camera off, and was finished with the final video of the day! :D

Now, I couldn't resist exploring the rest of the mudflats! :D So, I first cleaned my legs off in the center pond, removed my junk shorts and then headed back into the mudflats. I walked all over the part east of where I had made my first crossing, finding it was all the same depths. I then walked through the area west of my first crossing, going all over the place, and finding it not getting any deeper than my upper thighs there as well, testing it all the way to the far west end. Not finding any deeper mud, I decided to try and have a stimulating horizontal sink before calling it quits. But, after numerous tries in a number of places without luck, sometimes getting my bent knees down into a slightly deeper depression under the looser muck and leaning over, I started to hear the rumbling of thunder from the east  , which told me to call it quits. In fact, the sky to the south that looked like it was clearing was now filling with clouds, which could potentially turn into more thunderheads!

So, I returned to the center pond, and cleaned off on the eastern side of it before air drying and getting dressed. I changed my camera's picture size back to the original 4:3 aspect ratio, and took a photo of the center of the mudflats at 6:39 pm (getting rather late), showing the multiple trails I had left in the slurry-like mud:

2026 08 26 2ZB Ring Bog Pond.jpg

I put my camera away, got my things together, and took the stick back to the edge of the forest to the east on my way out. There was another brief shower around that time as well. I can't remember if I swapped memory cards before I left the ring bog, or when I got back to the bike. I put my things away, and was on my way back down the sideroad, then back to Crescent Road, and then the main road, where I snacked on a Sweet & Salty bar. I hadn't even reached the downhill portion of my return when my brother pulled up! I offloaded my stuff (except for my bag of sinking related stuff and other things), put it into the truck, and he loaded up my bike in the back, and we were off to home, saving me from the neck-rattling downhill descent! :D

It was an interesting day, with me having another dramatic submergence sink on video, this time without getting a mouthful of mud! :) Looking at the video later on, it turned out that the dried leaf "marker" was close to center, and when I jumped to the left of it in the camera's perspective, I was off-center for the video. But, the camera still caught all the action! 8-) I did encounter a leech during my cleanup. I was also glad to have tried out that mudflat to satisfy my curiosity, and got one trip through it on video, although I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't deeper. Thinking back, I seem to vaguely remember many years ago that I had sunk there before, working myself deeper into the stiffer peat under the looser stuff.

As I waited for the next adventure, I was concerned about the cooler rainier weather, with it even SNOWING in the very high elevations on the weekend! But, hopefully it was just cold rain at my bog. :? I just hoped that for my next adventure, that my bog wouldn't be covered in water, and that the mud/water wouldn't be chilled. :? So, I had to wait for the next break to warm, sunny weather to return to my treacherous quagmire! 8-)

My September 1'st, 2026 Adventure, Part 1!

After my last adventure, I was a bit concerned about the cooler wetter weather we had during the following weekend. It rained much of the day on Saturday, August 29'th, and during the weekend, there was even SNOW at the really high elevations! We had around 3/4 of an inch of rain at our house! But, there was a two-day spell of warmer weather on Monday August 31'st and Tuesday September 1'st, with it being sunny Monday and 25˚C (77˚F), but becoming a mix of sun and cloud Tuesday, but warmer with an expected high of 27˚C (81˚F). However, there was a slight chance of showers late afternoon with a risk of a thunderstorm. But that was late in the afternoon. So, wanting to give things an extra day to dry out from those rains, I targeted Tuesday, September 1'st for my adventure! :D

My brother and I left shortly after 9 am, and on the way up, we saw a turkey vulture on the side of the road, and afterwards, a white-tailed deer. No sign of cattle. When my brother dropped me off, the temperature was only 16˚C (61˚F), noticeably cooler than last time, but then, the forecasted high in the valley of 27˚C (81˚F) was also noticeably cooler than last time, when it was supposed to be low to mid 30's˚C (high 80's to mid 90's˚F) in the valley on the day of my previous adventure. I was wearing a hooded jacket to keep myself a bit warmer, and also took along a windbreaker in case it rained later on. I tested my bike, and things checked out. I put my things in my saddlebags, my brother took off, and I was on my way! 8-)

The offroad vehicle ban was finally removed due to less heat and the recent wetter weather, meaning that there could be vehicles accessing any sideroad at any time, which concerned me. :? I just hoped that it would stay quiet on my sideroad. :? I parked my bike in its usual spot by coniferous trees north of the pond, swapped memory cards in my camera, grabbed my things, and headed to the pond and my bog! :D But, just as I headed into the northwestern part of the meadow around my pond, I heard some cracking of branches. The area was all trampled and grazed on, with drying cowpies all over the place, but it seemed deserted, with no cattle around. Just in case it was a bear, I decided to head back to my bike to grab my lunch and drinks as well, since I didn't want a repeat of what happened years ago at my Edwin Lakes area pond, when a bear ate all my lunch, which left me feeling drained and weak for the rest of the day! I then headed to my bog, and just as I had expected, there was some water on top, although not as much as I had feared. Mostly a small pool in the middle north side, and there were muskrat tracks running through the mud as well. I could tell it was muskrat because of a line in the mud that was made by its tail. It was shortly after 11 am. I set my things down in their usual place in the alders, removed my shoes, took out my camera and took some photos of the bog, starting at 11:07 am:

2026 09 01 3A Crescent.jpg

2026 09 01 3B Crescent.jpg

2026 09 01 3C Crescent.jpg

2026 09 01 3D Crescent.jpg

At first I was a bit uncertain whether I could sink right away because of how cool it felt while I was biking there. But, with the skies clear and the sun out, I could really feel the heat! :D But then, I was still wearing my jacket. :? So, I got undressed, and it still felt nice and warm in the strong late morning sunshine! :D I first headed to the pond to feel the water, and found it to be slightly cool but not too bad. :) I knew that I would have to limit the depth of my sink to the lower part of my abdomen, and hopefully would be able to go deeper once it got warmer in the afternoon, because I couldn't wait for another submergence sink later on in the day! :D

I walked over to the west side of the bog, the thickest side, and picked a spot there that was fairly high relative to other parts of the bog, and after savouring the anticipation, I made the fateful leap into the southern part of the west part of the bog, southwest of the puddle of water, with the hungry mire eagerly gulping me down to my waist, blowing farts in the process! :D I slowly struggled, at first without breaking the surface with my hands/arms, feeling the hug of the thick mire creeping up my body! :D I started to struggle more, pushing my arms down into the thicker surface layer and into the gooey stuff below, the bog quivering around me and blowing more bog farts! The mud to my front left was closer to the puddle of water and was loose on top, but it was a thin layer of loose stuff on top of a top layer that was thicker. Each time I got too far up my abdomen, I would work my feet up, and then straighten my body to allow me to rise up higher, since I wanted to avoid getting my upper body muddy this early in the day. But, I was happy to feel the full strength of the sun on my body, which made things rather comfortable! :D I just hoped that the sun would stay like this all day, since that would lock in a submersion sink later on! :D Finally, I began to struggle vigorously, until the feel of the mud raised my stimulation to the exploding point! :D

Now, I was ready to begin the next part of my sinking session. After a brief bit of swishing a little bit of the loose mud near the puddle over top the thicker stuff just to the south of it, I worked myself around to face west, and then proceeded to work myself backwards, towards the small puddle of water! It was a long, slow process, with me staying in each spot for a while, enjoying the feel of the mud before I would work myself backward, making certain that I had the mud in front of me smoothed out on top. I would work my legs back, and then the rest of my body, moving mud from behind me to in front of me. I was also constantly picking out debris from the mud and tossing it away, such as tiny fragments of sticks, and even the odd tiny pinecone. I kept on working myself backward towards and eventually through the puddle, and having the stuff in front of me nicely churned up and smoothed out. I was also trying to pull some stuff from the west side towards me as well, to try and raise the low area around the puddle. I had to keep working myself up to keep the hungry mud from claiming my upper body, since I wanted to keep it dry and clean. I could feel also feel the mud grains slowly rubbing up my body as I slowly sunk down as well. I really loved how the mud kept on farting, as well as the sounds it made as I mushed it with my hands! :D However, partways through the process, I started to feel cooler, like the sunshine that was beating down so hard when I started seemed to have lost its punch! :? I noticed that the sunlight shining on things seemed a bit milkier, and then noticed a light haze that spread across the sky, filtering the sun! :x So now, I was not as comfortable as I was earlier, but the awesome feel of the mud eclipsed any slight discomfort I felt. 8-) I worked myself through the small puddle, and then once I was close enough to the north side, I was able to use the edge of the floating vegetation to push down on with my hands to help me move backwards and up, having to constantly pull mud from between me and the edge to in front of me. However, I found that the act of tugging against the mud while pushing down on the grass was causing some leg cramps to pop up due to the extra tension of the gripping mud on my legs, which subsided when I stopped pushing down on the grass and just pushed down on the mud instead, which resulted in less tugging and tension of the mud on my legs. Finally, I was up against the edge, and was finally able to lift/work myself up and sit back onto the floating root mat on the edge, and push the mud off my legs/feet into the bog, having to deal with the cramps again. I smoothed the surface out and was ready to clean up!

Because of the cooler water, and the problems with sediment being stirred up, I had been contemplating whether I should do the cleanup in the usual area in the pond, or if I should try a cleanup in the tiny pond to the south of the pond, where the bottom was solid. :? But, I was leaning towards the usual area, since it was closer. But first, I had to relieve myself by some alder bushes, because my bladder had been on the verge of bursting. After I finished, I suddenly heard something! It was the sound of a truck! And, it was driving up the sideroad! I quickly headed behind the alders and saw it pass by. I was glad no one saw me! But, since it was headed up the road, which had dead-end branches, it was going to come back sooner or later! :x So, I headed to the tiny pond on the south end of the clearing for my cleanup, which was very far out of sight of the road, hoping that by the time I had finished cleaning up, the truck would have long since turned around and left the area.

When I entered the water from the south side, and stirred up the shallow layer of sediment on the solid bottom, I was suddenly hit with the coldest water I felt this season! It was so cold that I was aching between my legs for the first time! :x I had hoped that it being open water with fewer yellow waterlilies would make it warmer, but there were some bushes providing some shade on parts of it. I picked out one of the submerged logs to sit on, and swished away some sediment and cloudy water, trying to replace it with milder surface water. I immersed myself not quite up to the top of my muddy skin. Feeling a bit uncomfortable, I began to clean the mud off, rubbing hard, since the thick mud left patches of dark residue on my skin. Then, I stood up to clean myself down lower, and then moved to progressively shallower water to finish the job, before exiting the water. I tried to identify the area as I used to remember, but couldn't see the rock outcropping on the east side of the exiting now dry streambed, although I did see the dry streambed. There were more bushes there than I remembered. I headed back, taking care not to touch any vegetation that might have had mud rub off onto during my entrance to the area. I returned to my bog, nice and dry already and got dressed. I grabbed my camera and starting at 1:38 pm, took photos of the bog that I had worked and smoothed out earlier:
