That sunset is fantastic!

You can see some mighty small detail on the big picture of the three ships. Not that I know anything about ship design...but I could even see the life preservers and read the names on their hulls! Cool.

** the occasion for the Coast Guard in the pics there was a change-of-command ceremony for the Hollyhock, which ecplains why she was dressed. :)

I'd like to know more too of the technical details of the shots too.
I have a D90 with the same 18-105 lens.
Maybe post them on dpreview.com. Its a camera site and fourm for groups to talk about cameras and lenses.

Right now shots are mix from Nikon D300 and Nikon Coolpix 8800; the fullsize shot was taken with a 70-300mm zoom while coming up the river. The 300mm zoom is very handy to use (and remains a lens of choice for shooting very close in sinking scenes :) ) Left the 400mm zoom at home this time , mostly due to weight , but it is the best for very high power shots. The only drawback on it is its size and weight, better suited to a tripod which do not carry shipboard. Even for sinking shots, its generally too much lens for the pits, unless you use for very long-range stuff, or looking to get some foreshortened look in a shot. Maybe see if its worthwhile this year again, but not the easiest to work with in tight.

Beautiful pictures!

The sunset shots are really nice when you can pull them off. I'll use anything that I can brace against to steady the shot, or I'll set the camera on something for a timer shot. Fence posts work wonders.

The pictures of the ships are very nice, especially the one of the US Coast Guard cutters. The detail is so cool that you can see one guy in his dress whites off to the right on the dock amongst the tables. Looks like one table is for setting their hats.

I like the Nikon 70-300. It's such a sweet and portable lens for bringing in those distant shots. Does yours have vibration reduction?

Thanks for sharing these!

Yeah, that's probably for the change-of-command ceremony onboard.

No, the 70-300 zoom I have is the standard issue model; the 80-400mm zoom however does have stabilization, which makes handheld shots easier at times. Just wish it was a tad lighter :)

Here's another look at a sunrise shot, using the 300mm zoom; always fun when playing with the exposure settings manually, you get some real good images there I find
