Tarzan Films with Quicksand Scenes On Sale

Postby quikmoose » Fri Nov 26, 2010 1:34 am

Dear Gang:

A year or so ago, Warner Brothers issued a number of old films on DVD as “Warner Archive Titles”, including many of the Tarzan movies done after Johnny Weismuller left the franchise. Several include quicksand scenes. However, the original price on these films (some of which are gawd awful) was quite high. They go for $27 on Amazon. But Movies Unlimited is having a sale where these titles are only $17.99, which is still way too much for stupid movies, but might appeal to some on this list. The sale goes through December 1st.

To see the full list, go to:

Titles include (in no particular order):

“Tarzan’s Hidden Jungle” – One of the more boring Tarzan movies ironically has one of the classic (if not THE classic) Hollywood quicksand scenes in which poor Vera Miles stumbles around in the jungle, tearing off her skirt in the process, and falls into a big quicksand pool, struggling to get out. A very nice long classic quicksand scene. The rest of the movie stinks, although it did introduce Gordon Scott as Tarzan, who went on to, ironically, do some of the best Tarzan films.

“Tarzan the Magnificent” – One of the great Tarzan films (realistic and adult) includes a pretty good quicksand scene where Tarzan tackles a bad guy into a quicksand pit and they both must get out. Gordon Scott plays Tarzan (for the last time), and Jock Mahoney, who would replace Scott in the next Tarzan film, plays the bad guy. Also has Tarzan leading a group of people through a swamp up to their shoulders in skuzzy water, including a nice blond and a brunette (Betta St. John).

“Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure” – Another really fine Tarzan film, has a bad guy running around until he runs into quicksand. Not a great scene, but if you like Tarzan films, this is one of the best. Includes a young, pre-Bond Sean Connery as a thug who gets one of Gordon Scott’s arrows in the belly.

“Tarzan and the She Devil” – Not quicksand, but has a very good scene where Jane (played by Joyce MacKenzie in a nice fur bikini) falls into a watery pit in the jungle and cannot climb out, fending off advances from an amorous American alligator and stock footage of an Anaconda from South America. The “She-Devil” in the title, played by Monique Van Vooren (yes, I am not making this up), is a well-rounded babe who really looks quite great in jungle safari outfit. Also stars Raymond Burr as the heavy.

I’ll probably wait for the prices to drop further, but for those who can’t wait, this is the best deal I’ve seen so far for these early Tarzan movies.

I know we like to think that Africa has lots of quicksand to trap unwary people, but in reality, is quicksand any more common in African jungles than anywhere else in the world?
