The Thuds (also a Republic aircraft BTW, like the P-47) did rather well for a supersonic nuclear bomber pressed into service as a conventional strike aircraft. Also a MiG killer (27.5 kills), and the later Weasel varients were extremely effective at making life interesting (and short) for SAM sites and radar control vans.
Dunc -- 320 in combat; 283 out of 610 D-models built, (over 46%) the remaining 37 F/G models. Another 62 operationally of all models

And then they name the first carrier after Langley? The guy who spent the taxpayers' money crashing planes into the Potomac while the Wright Brothers were inventing aerodynamics? Figures.

Hence the nickname of the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), the "Ronnie Ray-Gun." Technically the last hull of the Nimitz class, she's a test bed for next-gen technology. She's electric drive, and that means lots of power available for other tasks.

Re: The Need For Speed
They had me at "plasma conduit." Want!
Eventually I want to do some experiments with diode lasers. A laser diode will accept a much larger pulsed current than its continuous duty rating. Would like to find out if you could get more net power out of multiple laser diodes using a phased pulse-cooldown cycle than at their continuous power rating.
