I just noticed this (kind of late).
The source of this data is now years old. Yahoo Groups allowed you to declare your gender in your profile and the membership was openly readable. I simply got a sheet of paper and drew two columns and opened up the membership lists and for every male, put a little mark under the "Male" column and for every female, put a little mark under the "Female" one.
Then I counted it all up.
I did this on two groups: Mine and Kaol's. I got the same percent on both groups, indicating that this was probably consistent across Quicksandland.
Profiles that did not declare gender were not counted. And my count assumed that everybody was telling the truth. We all know that this isn't so, though, and one of my group members attempted to calculate the "Lie Factor" into my figures. He came up with about 2% female. I did not adjust my figure on account of this, though, since I cannot read minds and I'm pretty sure he couldn't either.
I suspect that things have gotten better in recent years. When we moved off Yahoo Groups to Deep Sinking, things became noticeably better and that has continued here on Quicksand Fans. I am proud of our fetish niche for generally treating female members much better than some other fetish niches do, and it's definitely improved since Groups days.
But us gals are still just badly outnumbered. In fact the situation remains very serious. When cloning become cheap and affordable, though, I promise to donate some cells to the cause.
