Eventually, the university simply posted notices on buildings that a threat had been made and no one would be penalized if they did not attend class that day. Most everyone went to class, and the threats stopped almost immediately.

Didn't work here. We had this problem in 1996-1997. All the telephone calls were coming from the vicinity of the campus (and even from the public phones inside academic buildings), but nobody was caught. One day they simply distributed compact cassettes with the recorded calls and asked everybody to listen and try to recognize the voice. Of course, nobody was recognized (or at least nobody was reported), but apparently the idea that they can be recognized in such way came to their minds only after that. Actually, the false alarms ceased instantly.

Drown in quicksand? I never like grim endings, but in such case I probably would make an exclusion
There’s so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Freedom of speech means freedom of speech for everyone--even the assholes. It sucks but that's just how it has to be.

It really is like the group of girls who ginned up the Salem Witch Trials. Attention getting behavior = gets attention = behavior becomes accentuated, etc. Eventually, even the elders in Salem woke up to the fact that the girls were just making it up ( after too many burnings, unfortunately). The girls were then ignored, and it all went away. This group will all go away in the same fashion - not too soon for me, though. Talk about Christian behavior ...

The WBC does more to promote interest in "freedom from religion" than any atheist activist group could.

Those "people" protested several military funerals here in CO and what ended up happening was a group of bikers got together and formed a human line between the protesters and the folks burying loved ones.

You know, I saw the supreme court ruling that supported their right to free speech and although I DO have to support that right or it goes away VERY quickly. I certainly don't have to condone the message nor messenger, but it really does pain me to see this "right to free speech" abused in such a personal way.

Lest we forget the Matthew Shepard case in WY when this group's members had their first real media coverage protesting at this poor kids funeral, REALLY sad.

Somewhere in Afghanistan, there's a bunch of Taliban in a cave who think the Westboro Baptists give religious extremists a bad name.....

Got that right.

Love it.

99.9% of Fundamentalist Bible thumpers loathe the WBC and all it stands for. I'm sure that a similar percentage of Muslims would tell you much the same thing about the Taliban. Regardless of how you feel about any religion there's something wrong when groups like that are drawing all the attention. You'd like to declare a jihad on both groups by all the decent people in the world but that's kind of the problem. Decent people tend not to make trouble for others. 8-)
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

^^When the Fundamentalists think you should tone it down a notch you KNOW you've gone over the edge.

Readers with a sense of humor will appreciate this satire of the worst WBC types:

I saw this guy perform at an atheist conference in Tampa in 2003. His lines such as "protesting at a tampon factory to condemn those 'cotton fingers of the Devil'" and other quotable quotes left us rolling on the floor. Good times.

Along the same lines, this scene from the movie "Heaven Help Us" comes to mind:
