I'm sure things went on the we won't ever be told about.
The photo is bound to be bad. If I had to hazard a guess, the SEAL's were probably armed with M4's loaded with 5.56 NATO (Designation M193) which is the standard US military anti-personel round. The round, when it hits, does not drill a nice clean hole. The bullet is designed to destabilize and tumble end over end as it travels through the target, causing massive trama. If he was hit in the eye as was reported, the round left the face intact but probably took the whole back of the head off on it's way out.

Yeah, exactly that. I'm not crazy about the idea of putting the photos out there. An image in this day and age proves nothing anyway but will only become a useful tool for those who want to portray Osama as a martyr. He's dead and that's good enough for me. 8-)
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

My wife and I had a shot of Desorono along with my stepson and his bud. They both had plans on joining the Army before then. My wife hadn't seen that much testoserone in the room in a long time.

Where was I; in the shower.

Well, it was my birthday.

I was in bed, about to look over the birthday wishes on my Facebook wall. I kept reading messages like "USA USA USA!" and "About damn time!" in the news feed. I look at drudgereport.com and I'm speechless. I turn on the TV and I'm confused.

It was one hell of the birthday, I'll say as much.

Where was I? Well, I was on the PC about to log off and head to bed at around 10PM when I decided to check CNN's website and I saw that they had their breaking news banner saying that President Obama was going to make a major announcement at 10:30PM, so I decided to stay up and see what the fuss was about. I had the TV on CNN and the PC on a political blog that a visit a lot and followed along. I was happy and surprised as hell that bin Laden was nailed, I thought we grabbed/killed the #2 guy. Stayed up until 1:30AM to watch some of the reactions.

Finally, justice.

9/10 for me.

After being up late celebrating, I woke the next morning to my partner asking, "Where is the World Trade Center?"

Still asleep, I answered, "New York City."

"Is it possible to hit it with an airplane?"

"Yes," was my unconscious reply. "But you'd have to mean it."

"Well, somebody just did."

I was instantly awake. When I saw footage of the second aircraft hitting the other tower I said, "And in case there was still any doubt this wasn't deliberate …"

A few years later, I did sound for a 9/11 memorial. A firefighter who was on scene described what happened to his captain when he was hit by a jumper coming down from over a hundred stories above.

My feelings about all of this? If Bin Laden had been before me, I would have shot him myself. I would view it as the prudent thing to do. Like killing a poisonous snake, or a rabid dog, to protect my family.

Where was I?

Here in Louisiana. It was a fairly typical quiet evening.

I was doing a bit of websurfing and speaking with a friend online when the news that bin Laden was dead came.

I must admit that, while I try not to wish harm on anyone (occasionally I'm even successful), there are obituaries that put a smile on my face.

There was a really nice moment of catharsis there.

We're still at war. We're out trillions of dollars, thousands of lives, and God only knows how many walking wounded. Maybe nothing has changed, the dead are still dead.

But the world's still a better place without the sorry son of a bitch in it. As the good Nessie pointed out, the sharks have to eat, too.

As for what I was doing on Tuesday, 9-11-2001, I had awakened to go to class. I switched the TV on to provide enough light to get to the bathroom. I saw a building smoking onscreen, didn't quite make the connection. I came back and saw the CNN headline crawl under the video, and stopped dead there, just watching. I couldn't stop looking. A little while later, I saw a second plane come in, bank hard and slam into the other tower.

It took a bit to comprehend that many of the little bits I saw falling were actually people. I couldn't tell you what I actually felt. Or...no, that's a lie. I can you what I felt.

I felt numb. Just...numb.

I woke my mother, kissed her and told her what had happened. We spent the morning watching the news. I never made it to class.

Later, I had to go pick up a few things at the store, and have the tires changed on my car. When I did, I noticed the utter lack of people on the road, the lack of planes in the sky, the lack of...well, anyone. There were a handful of people at Brookshires. A couple of cars in town. Other than that, I saw a few transport trucks and police, and that was it. It felt so surreal, and it started to slam home the fact that, whatever happened, this was affecting nearly everyone. Everyone, perhaps, save the one loudmouthed employee at Brookshires who loudly opined at length, to anyone who cared to listen, that he didn't particularly give a damn what happened in New York, that if they didn't want to die they shouldn't have been living there in the first place. Numbness gave way to revulsion, and I quickly left. I don't remember ever seeing him again.

The dreams came that night, and for several nights after--just a repeat of the same endless horror we'd seen that day on television. People falling and buildings collapsing, from every angle, including from directly beneath.

So...yeah.

A decade later, and one of the bastards most directly responsible is dead, finally. And the world is a slightly cleaner place. It feels a little like I've been holding my breath for the last decade, and just now I've finally gotten around to letting some of it out.
