Update On The Great Big Frozen Mudpit

Obviously there's still some water to get rid of, but this is what the great big frozen mudpit from January looks like now.

...and where I am in this picture would be way on the left side of that picture -- actually, probably a bit out of that range.

I managed to confirm at least a couple feet under some of this water but with about two feet of water over it, it's hard to sink into that without going under in a non-fetish substance...boring old plain water.

The sudden underwater sinkholes are interesting. You really need to watch your step. You can suddenly drop down into deeper mud just inches where it was firm.

Actually, once the mud temperature catches up to the air temperature, it might be more fun NOT to avoid those.

I actually don't wear the "pink scarf" with my waders when I am alone. It's just a belt, and in real life it's a leather or faux leather or something leathery...anyway, it has a gold veneer of some kind.

If I know I'm going to try to get pictures, though, it just looks a lot better.

I am hoping that all the running around I've done at Massivia, as I all it, pans out. When I mud-hunt for awhile, I see bog after bog after bog, mostly with water on top, and they might have mud or a firm ground...and all the pictures are kind of the same early in the year...well, what can I say but that mud-hunting ain't exactly a fast-gratification hobby?

You lose more than you win. Which is why everybody wants to know where mud is.

What I know now is that it's definitely under there but how deep? And only where I had time to check -- or everywhere?

It looks like that place has loads of potential, Nessie. Once the water levels drop some, which I'm sure they will over the course of time.

My place is usually about a foot or so under water until late June... the exception being last year, when abnormally hot and dry conditions enabled me to wallow happily several weeks early. It also takes time to warm up, and for the deer fly swarms to drop to tolerable levels.... (Mosquitoes and blackflies don't bug me much, frankly...) Conditions are ideal around mid-July, which by an astonishing coincidence I happen to have two weeks holidays planned.

Have to make the most of it... my sinking season is usually done by Labor Day...

Every year, things are different! I have a feeling that I'm waiting longer than usual this year to shoot footage because everything's so wet, but I'm okay with some water over it just for playtime.

The beauty of this area, though, is that it's on a flood plain that is separated by a river. There's way more than one swampland/marsh/lake/pond in this wilderness, and if one area doesn't pan out, I can just keep going.

I liked the feel of this mud, though. It felt sandy/clayish, which is a welcome relief from the usual peaty organic stuff. Um...guess we'll see!

Nahh, you're right, it does look pinkish in the photo!

We folks are still out there in the nature, able to hike and enjoy the scenery. And most often these are secluded, off-map areas, available just for us. For me finding a new location is just a nice topping.

Part of the reason I post this stuff is to try to encourage people not to give up on their own mud-hunts. I often see messages asking where they can find something. If somebody knows and shares, that's great, but all too often, that method strikes out because wherever it is, it isn't close enough!

If they see that it's a slow process with an occasional hit and mostly misses even for Nessie The Quicksand Girl, perhaps they won't give up so fast.

But it is true...if you don't like the outdoors or enjoy Nature, it's hard to last very long at this.

If anything, I've developed a much greater appreciation for Nature than I had before I ever did this. I have taken nature books with me. I have a bird book, a tree book, and a couple flower books. My new HD camera has been practiced on wild critters.

You can learn a lot on the way to and from a mudpit.

Sorry I have dropped out of sight so abruptly. I am following your explorations into the new large bog. I have no such new large bog, so I cannot relate. I am glad that you have the guts to explore and then to share. My arthritis is such that it will be difficult to explore, so I love following others' exploits even more. You have shared enough pretty sexy sequences, that I hope you can continue, even if on a cameo videos - too good to miss totally. i just have issue going on right now for the summer - may rectify come fall. I love this and your other work - it would not be the same site without you. Good luck and good sinking (and filming!). Any further, or off-record scenes, would be great material.

Hope all is well on personal front. Keep your head up .. . .. at least above the Q surface, ha, ha!

I was wondering how you were, Jack. I've been pretty busy what with running around looking for sites and trying to plan shoots.

I don't have that much spare time to just play on forums and post messages any more. (Used to, a couple day jobs back, but not now.)

We're getting VERY CLOSE to shoot time around here.

Nahh, don't worry...you'll still be seeing me in the bogs for awhile...I got to practice the new Camera-Baby on something, and I'm the only model I have who's free.

I also have acquired a great deal of test footage of ducks, geese, and other feathered friends. It is good practice to try to stalk a critter with that newfangled HD-camera thing. But it is off topic to post the footage here, plus, I never quite realized how ugly a wild turkey-face is on 20X zoom...wowie, I got that turkey-face to fill the screen!

Slithered out to the same place today after work. We had record-high temperatures today so although there wasn't much sunlight time left, I just had to try to get in there.

I got in all righty. And mud is bared...and no waders obviously, since it was almost a hundred degrees...but...

BRRRRR!

Wonder what's up with this? Perhaps those sudden dropoff sinkholes are spring-fed? I got in about waist-deep but my bare skin went numb. Didn't get deeper because, to be honest, I couldn't take the cold...that felt like it was barely above freezing!

The mud that was not by the sinkholes was warm enough...it just wasn't deep there.

I don't think I could ever ask a model to try that although if I had a wetsuit on, perhaps I could film a scene of me.

Very weird stuff it was, too. Kind of a clayish/sandy/peaty mess with stuff floating on top.

It didn't stink or anything, though.
