She certainly did. Scarlett hit the thickest stuff and by the time it closed around her very substantial chest she was in there good. I don't recall exactly but I believe it took me, Robert, Droopy, and Jiminy Thicket all to extract her. We may have had some help from Kristine as well but it's getting blurry now. Either way she wasn't getting free without some help. If she had been alone I think she would have eventually gotten out but it would not have been fun. 8-)
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

I have had lots of experience sinking into peat bogs (muskeg), and have never had any trouble getting out. You can check out my videos in this thread, featuring me sinking into a bog of varying thicknesses throughout the season. I dramatize things a bit, and do a bit of fun floundering/struggling to get out.

But, in general, for thin stuff, if anything solid is out of reach, you can swim through it, or make walking motions through it, using swishing motions with your hands to help you move forward, like you would when you are walking through chest to neck deep water. For thick stuff, if you are out of reach of anything solid, you can get out by first working yourself up vertically by lifting up your feet, straightening out your legs to make yourself rise higher, work up your feet higher, straighten your legs again, to work yourself up higher, etc., until you can't get any higher, which may tend to be around waist deep. Then you sit back and work your legs to the surface, and then straighten out horizontally until your entire body is laying on the surface, and then you can crawl/roll back to solid ground. 8-)

BM has summed it up quite well. The only thing I would add, is that wearing clothing can make it much harder to get out (depending on what it is and how much of the mud/water it absorbs). Also, don't exhaust yourself or get muscle cramps if struggling too hard to get out - bear in mind, cold water/mud can make this much more of an issue. The right technique definitely makes all the difference :D

I have only had real problems when once wearing too much/the wrong clothing (jeans) which weighed me down - and in very thick estuary tidal mud, where it had been exposed for a quite while and had semi-solidified (it was far too thick to move my legs though and suction stopped me pulling them out). In both these cases, I was no deeper than waist/thigh deep.

As others have said, if you can wiggle your way down to neck deep reasonably easily, then you should have no real problems getting out.

The trick, especially in really thick mud, is to not pull against it. Lay on your back or, if you're in deeper, just lean back, and sort of gyrate your hips rapidly back and fourth. It can be tiring and it might take a while but eventually you'll be floating on the surface. Saves on pulled muscles too. 8-)

I also heard that in one of Chuck Lang's (RIP) vids that two models doing a sink also needed help getting out.

Any thick mudpit that is deep enough for a proper sink will probably be trouble getting out of without something to pull on.
I like to get in this kind of mud, but I will need a rope or pole to pull myself out, because when armpit deep in thick stuff, (like clay) there's no way that laying on my back will help (even without suction). If there is something sturdy to tie a rope to, I would bring a climbing rope and harness, but I like to tie the rope to the straps of my lifejacket instead, so falling tugs make the lifevest tighter. However, difficulty getting out is part of the fun! (I struggle in quicksand on purpose to sink deeper and get more stuck) Especially if it's a sticky sucking kind.
Sometimes if I am going to have a lengthy mud session, I have it trap me on purpose, with things to hold me down.
If the mud doesn't have a strong grip, I can usually climb my way out like normal. If it does have a strong grip, (and I'm armpit deep) it will take awhile to get out. I wear a life vest over my rain suit mainly for the fetish (and for balancing how deep I sink).
My escape technique will force me deeper, but sometimes the life jacket can prevent that. (Not always, due to the thickness and suction of the mud, this technique can still force me and my lifevest down sometimes, this can also make for a more interesting sink as I hold my arms up to take the challenge of keeping my nylon rainsuit sleeves clean, so I never reach into the mud even if the mud is to my neck, also making escape more difficult.), but the lifejacket helps keep me between armpit and shoulder deep, which is perfect depth for my fetish, perfect level to remain stuck at. :D

Usually the escape isn't that much of a problem though, the mud pits I have been describing are ones I can no longer go to, but the 4ft deep clay-mud-silt pit by the oregon millpond I still go to (I can share this) can be sticky, but is very easy to loosen up.

My idea of heaven is a mud/clay hole that is (nearly) impossible to get out of. I love sinking in any mud but if it turns out to be really sticky & holding that is a big bonus As to getting stuck ; the nearest I ever did was to be slowly creeping out of a wallow as the tide came . I ended up swimming up the creek in company with a shoal of mullet who nibbled me as I swam !!!
Never been in deep peat but it looks exciting if thick enough to hold you as you try to get out but I suppose that you could not sink very deep in that

That is my favorite type of stuff as well, stuff that is a challenge to get out of due to its thickness, stickiness and grip, but NOT the stuff that packs around you that requires digging. Peat is the easiest to go under in, because it is organic, therefore being of lower density than the mineral-based quicksand/silt/clay.

My thread of videos demonstrates my sinks in both the peat bogs of varying thicknesses and in quicksilt:

I have seen tons of your videos and they are absolutely amazing :) . I can say the same thing as you said, but anything that is deep enough to sink in (this is rare for me, but occasionally I find a good spot), I appreciate, despite if it requires digging. If I get desperate, I will dig a hole (or find one), climb in and then fill it with mud or clay (this can be difficult to get out of, as the mud usually compresses, but that is good) and relax being buried upto my armpits. This is easiest to do with beach sand, as clay is very hard to dig and where I go in Oregon is mostly clay (I have a spot with silt, clay, and soft mud that is 4ft deep, but I am 6'0" tall so it is barely deep enough, it is easy to get out barefoot but hard with boots or waders).
You are lucky, BC seems to have a lot of sinking spots compared to Oregon as of how I see it. How common are deep spots there? (When searching wisely)
