A bit of an SOS

Postby James diGriz » Fri Oct 21, 2011 8:27 am

Wednesday night, some myopic little prick decided to rob me. The police have leads and information, but it will be highly unlikely that I would get the data from that computer back(almost 18 years of information) Thankfully if they try the password too many times and fail, it will wipe everything. Whilst I look to recover data from old drives, I indeed have my work cut out for me.

If I find the person who did this, you may not hear from me for a long time.

Bank receipts, tax records, even contact lists... You're not just protecting your fetish from discovery if somebody takes your equipment; you are protecting your livelihood.
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

If you lost any purchased videos, from me at least, I have records of purchases - just get in touch for a replacement download.

Sorry to hear this man. You never expect it to happen to you and then it does. Just be glad you got away alive and in one piece.

I have my conceal and carry permit, but when you aren't home when it happens it is a pain. And yes, I protect all my data securely. The program will activate once 5 incorrect passwords are entered and destroy the drives.

I want to thank everyone who offered help. I had archived materials for the last 16+ years. It may be a long going, but I thankfully have most of the older stuff archived, mainly missing the recent glut for the last couple years. The moderators may want to move this to the request forum, but I would ask if anyone has some of the more recently found tv and movie clips, I would appreciate it. Youtube has a few, but not many of the better quality clips.

I would appreciate any assistance in rebuilding this archive once again. If you can assist, my contact information remains the same as always.

I will post updates and my many thanks to those who can help.

What program destroys drives after a few attempts? I've never heard of that and would be curious about it....but even if the person did fail five times, it doesn't literally "burn up" the drive...unless it is set to bit-shred with 0's and 1's, the data could still be recovered (by someone who knows a lot about computers systems, not some ordinary criminal), They also could stop destroy process obviously by turning it off way before it could delete all the data. Then they could have someone VERY computer savvy recover the data. Not trying to scare you obviously, but it could still be done i suppose
Yeah I know it sucks to lose something like that, you feel like you've been violated or something, but I wouldn't worry about it, the dude ain't gonna care about your stuff....you can just change your cred. card #"s or any other personal info if that worries you. Even if there was illegal stuff on there, I doubt a criminal would "tell" anyone because they would be incriminating themselves by admitting they stole it. So why woory?

it's an addition to the BIOS. I set a BIOS password, and it starts the wipe. Looks like the boot screen, but it wipes areas by deleting and rewriting over and over.

It is not uncommon for major companies to remote wipe their cell phones, laptops and more to save their secrets. I ask myself. "Would you want someone whom you do not know pawing through everything you had, learning your deep secrets?"

I don't know about you, but I cannot answer "yes". Can you?
