And that was enough back in the day. They had bigger rigs for the longer reach when they needed it. I was standing on a hill in Israel at a fortress built by Herod and looking down on an Arab community. This was during the TWA hijacking in '85 when out of nowhere four Phantoms roared in. They blew by below the level I was at right on the rooftops and then went almost vertical into the sun. It's very cool to be looking DOWN on a flight of F-4s and I doubt I'll ever get a chance for that again. I turned to an Israeli friend and asked him what that was all about.
