One of the few times I've seen someone sink from the ankles and calves slowly is the segment with Mina's screentest. She had to move quite a bit to go down, not complaining lol. Only she couldn't go any deeper than her waist. I really liked the pace of that sink in particular. Lucy had the same type of sink too.

As for the sudden submersions, it's not my cup of tea either. But I'm sure there are some people who do.

Yeah I remember that some of the old Club MPV videos, featured on stuff like quicksand terror, quicksand drama which had a pit of actual quickSAND that I presume was made liquid with a hidden water pump being switched on something - they were great for someone stepping in and then slowly sinking to knees and then waist.

I don't think I ever saw someone go deeper than chest deep, but that was OK, I don't need every seen to be a submergence.

"Here Doggie" also has her getting stuck ankle deep and eventually end up deeper, though again she doesn't get more than waist deep.

Okay, so here's my idea on how to get slow submersions (even if that wasn't the original point of the thread): place some sort of solidly fixed pole or board (or whatever) under the mud that the sinkers can use to steadily pull themselves down with, instead of having to use just their arms to fight the thickness of the mud. Additionally, there could be a way to soften the deepest mud with water, while keeping the surface muck thick, thus allowing an easier sink. Tell me how practical my ideas are

To be frank its not very practical. At one of the first shoots by anothe producer using Studio 588, there was an attempt to use a horizontal pipe attached to two out of frame vertical pipes held by crew members. The model could not do it as she did not have the strength and I believe she found it painful to ty to hook her feet under the pipe. Trying to hook the pipe behind her knees did not seem to work either. The remnants of that pipe set-up are still here.

Doing a slow submersion is not difficult at all and many, many slow ones have been done over the years by several methods. Slow is, of course, a relative term, but there have been many times I wondered if an actress would get all the way under before she had to come up for breath.

Basically...it's just practice.

I would expect nobody to get it on the first try. The natural inclination is toward the sudden plunge. And it's a strange environment for a model at first.

But after they've gotten used to it, assuming a good workable quicksand pit...I would figure that most should be able to nail it with a bit of coaching.
