Discussion of alcohol does sometimes degenerate into a series of soapbox speeches, pro and con. I think that is most unfortunate as in such events no one ever listens to anything the other side has to say. "Drinking" seems to get defined by one side (and sometimes the other as well) as getting drunk. There is, of course, a middle ground, at least for most of us. Drinking can mean the reasonable and temperate consumption of beverages containing alcohol, and without leading to intoxication. There is some evidence that tat may even be healthy in many, though not all, adults.

Personally, I think beer tastes like the water used to do the dishes after the dishes are done. Yuk! And I have no taste for whiskey or vodka or other really hard liquor. But I do like an occasional wine with a meal or a spoonful of flavored brandy over a dish of ice cream.

I'm with Nessie on this one. Too much booze doesn't affect the device nearly as much as it affects the user.

Nothing I wrote was intended as a soapbox lecture.

I believe alcohol, in moderate amounts, is actually healthy for some people. Just, I don't happen to be one of them. And I'm not sure anyone really knows why for some people alcohol is a lifestyle enhancement that is never consumed in anything but moderation while for others, it becomes a life-wrecking glass of chaos or even death.

You are quite right. Alcohol may be thought of as a slow-acting, selective anesthetic. "Selective" means it anesthetizes some parts of the nervous system more and faster than other parts. Those parts of the brain associated with higher-level functions, such as judgement and foresight, are affected more than parts associated with more primitive functions, such as motor control. That is, put simply, why an intoxicated person can still operate a motor vehicle, albeit not very well, or to go for a quick night of abandonment, when the judgement to know better has gone to sleep.

Sadly, there's too many people who will stomp on their soapbox to insist that the latter is entirely too good a reason to take it away from the former as well. "Because some people can't control themselves, we need to ruin it for everybody!"

I've always been in moderation. What I can't get are why we let the ones get away with causing accidents in their drunken driving stupor four to six times (all but one on a SUSPENDED LICENSE to boot!) before we finally lock them up.

My daughter was born holding my wifes IUD in her hand. If you are meant to get pregnant, it will happen.

Personally I don't want to get pregnant till I get married, I know that sound a little old fashioned, but it makes sense to me since I was raised in the country and I still live in a country area

There are some practical reasons for that too. Not the least of which is that if you don't want to be around someone enough to at least play house together you probably don't want to have a kid with them. Adding a child to life does not make anything easier but it's the best difficult thing I ever came across. 8-)
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

There is nothing old fashioned or wrong about waiting till your married. Kids do best and are the least at risk when they live in a two parent household with one parent working and the other staying home with them.
That was my family life. Dad went to work, mom stayed home and took care of the kids and the house (a job just as difficult and in her opinion, just as fulfilling, as any job with a paycheck). The result so far is three well adjusted children with no criminal records (imagine that in a world where a 3rd of people are arrested before they're 21 now). Two of us have successfully completed college (mostly on our own dime) and one of us is on the way (littlest bro has a year to go).
Most of the issues we're seeing from today's youth are the direct result of parents not giving a fuck.
