This mishap must have been talked about a lot, since it sounded very familiar; sure enough, in Stephen Coonts's Intruders, the fellas at the O-Club mention an incident that is almost word-for word this accident It was used as an example of "things happen to Marines" , when Jake Grafton was being sent for a tour with a Marine A-6 outfit to avoid getting sued by some scumbag he had , er, tossed through a plate glass window

They say that when your chute fails to inflate, you've got the rest of your life to get it open. Thankfully, that maxim isn't infallible.

Engine fails, ejection seat fails not once but twice, chute then fails to open.....somebody in maintenance needs to be fired lol.
Wasn't there a tail gunner in WWII that had a similar experience? I only vaguely remember reading about it but I think the guy jumped out without his chute because the plane was on fire (better to die quick than burn) fell several thousand feed and landed in a haystack.

I read about a Russian Sturmovik pilot in WWII who bailed out of his burning aircraft without a chute. Managed to land on a steep, snow-covered mountainside and survived with only two broken legs.
