Idea for creative types - Naked Prey

Postby PM2K » Sun Nov 18, 2012 2:25 pm

Not sure where to place this, so I thought here will do for now. Not a request so much as an idea I'm floating out there to inspire and maybe gets some commentary going....

Anyone see The Naked Prey? I highly recommend this one. (It is out on DVD as part of the Criterion Collection) Stars Cornel Wilde (who filmed it when he was in his mid-50s) where he was a safari leader sent naked into the African landscape to be hunted down by a band of warriors. Very much man vs nature and man vs man at its most basic. Very little dialogue is used in the film, and it if is its in the native language, without subtitles. Very avant garde for its day... 1955 I think...

Now, I'm thinking such a set up just screams "quicksand!" Any of our producers think such a thing could be handled? The degree of naked, of course, can be left up to the individual film makers. I see it as being handled in one of two ways... as a solo scene with maybe some opening text to explain the situation, plus our quarry getting trapped and either escaping or not.... or we work in a warrior or two to add to the mix. They could be led into said qs pit by the quarry, who perhaps discovers it by falling in, escaping, and setting it up for the others to blunder into... and sink out of sight... or the warrior can view the trapped soul and watch her sink, or fall in together while fighting and either both sink, or one escapes...

Any authors or artists want to comment on this as well? Good idea? Any twists and turns you'd like to add?

This movie is supposed to be based on an apparently true story involving John Colter, the first white person (apparently) to visit the area that became Yellowstone Park. This alone establishes an excuse for a quicksand scene or six. The story is that Colter was captured a Blackfoot band. he was then stripped naked and given a sign to run for it. He was then chased but managed to kill one of them and make his escape. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Colter
I remember seeing a movie in which the same thing was re-enactedexcept the scene took place in Africa. My memory says it was a Tarzan flick and I don't think I would have been taken to see Naked Prey, but it might have been that.

I think one can make a case for Most Dangerous Game being the same theme except for the naked part. That, however, was written in the late 40s, I believe. In any case I agree the general idea needs to be made into a film.
Studio 588 currently offers more than 2200 different HD and QD quicksand videos and has supported production of well over 2400 video scenes and other projects by 20 different producers. Info may be found at:

My understanding of this the original idea was to do that very story of Couter, but it turned out to be cheaper to film in Africa, with tax breaks and other incentives, so they rewrote the story to make it an African adventure.

Still a helluva good film. :D

That reminds me of a movie called "Savages", based on the novel "Deathwatch", where a college student that was familiar with the Mojave desert was hired as a guide for a businessman who had a permit to hunt bighorn sheep. He accidentally shot a prospector, and the guide was the only witness. So, the businessman forced the guide to strip down to his shorts at gunpoint, and sent him off into the desert without any food or water, keeping an eye on him all the time, and shooting at him to keep him from leaving the desert alive.

Now, I could think of a scenario where a villain forces a victim to undress at gunpoint and then run through the woods, and then fires shots towards the victim to direct her to a swampy area that contains numerous deadly quicksand bogs. To make certain that the victim won't leave the area alive, the villain shoots at the victim each time she tries to leave the area, until she finally takes that fateful step.
I sink, therefore I WAM!!!!

Of course, a neat twist could be how our girl turns the tables on the baddie... say, by submerging, blowing out a lot of bubbles to give the impression she was a goner... and then later luring the villain into some poetic justice...

I, personally, like the whole concept. Would be fun to shoot, too.

I might want a female lead to force a male into the quicksand. Then, when she finds her deed done, she falls in herself (at another location, after getting lost).

Cornell Wilde was a friend of my father's, and I still have the original artwork that the credits rolled over at the end of the movie.
