According to that dutch newspaper she was playing on some artificial hill of earth at a construction site that has turned into a quagmire.

I have only a limited understanding of dutch, maybe someone else could give a more detailed translation.

Just saying ;)

As far as I remember it is correct - the wet ground on a construction site slid down and one of the girls who played there became trapped.

It was in 2008 and now I can't find the original articles. The above link doesn't work for me - it shows a wrong page.

Below are several photos that I saved from that article:

Actually, you don't need the knowledge nowadays. Google Translate gives you what you need. With some errors, sometimes serious, but in this case it doesn't matter.

By the way, it seems that girls in the Netherlands get stuck in quicksand pretty often (and usually it happens on wet fields or construction sites, not on the seashores). I'd say, several times more often than Ukrainian girls. At least if we judge by number of related articles. Those who are interested may search in Google by 'meisje vast in drijfzand'

Here is another accident with a girl from the Netherlands. In this case the girl is a bit older than the previous one, but for the policy purists of this site I have to confess that she is still underage in American understanding of age :P
The people in white shirts and blue trousers on the first photo are policemen who occurred to be near. As we can see, the brute force didn't work, and they had to wait for the firefighters.

The girl is cute, by the way.

One more accident, this year http://translate.google.com.ua/translat ... %3Dsuggest

And this girl is fat :)

Oh yes, it is right there! I was able to find other pages, too, with all those photos (much more than that were posted in this topic).

bart1997 wrote:Maybe the word "quicksand" is a bit overused in those recent articles. The Meisje from the last page became stuck in lots of wet and loose earth and the last photo shows a classic european bog that has become overgrown with trees. (Lots of these areas are my personal geting-stuck-and-sinking sites). Also almost all of the netherlands was either bog or sea before civilization started. So there is a good chance that after lots of rain the marshy or peaty soil can become soft and deep again.
You are quite right. Don't forget - the same is here on this forum. As I understand, it is British-American tradition. They call 'quicksand' anything in what you can sink and get stuck. Those firemen often explain that 'the mud was like quicksand' - as if any deep mud behaves differently (they don't mean that the mud solidified all of a sudden, they simply mean that the victim struggled-struggled and sank deeper and deeper). All that 'jungle quicksand' we mention so often is not quicksand in fact - it is wet ground, mud, bog. There are funny cliché, like a blond asks, 'oh, is there quicksand in this swamp?' - No, there is no quicksand here, baby! There is no quicksand in the BOG. But there are a lot of spots of deep soft mud from which you wouldn't get out without help. As I said elsewhere, there is even no adequate word for quicksand in Ukrainian. People sink and get stuck in the bogs here :P

Thank you for doing your job :)! However, you maybe haven't understood me. The girl whose images you removed was 17. The girl whose images you haven't removed yet (including the original 'News photo of 2008' posted by PM2K) was 12. It is not obvious from the photo, but she was really little. The firemen sad the depths of quicksand was no more than 60 cm (Google Translate translated it as 60 inches ) - as you can see it is up to her hips.

While removing the photos don't forget - there are ponies and other childish stuff on this forum, too ;)

It all reminds me the law in my country. Say, speed limit on roads is 90 km/h, the fine is for over-speeding more than 20 km/h, so they stop and fine those who drives faster than 110 km/h. But the speed limit for motorcycles (remained in the Rules since Soviet times) is 70 km/h. However, they don't even attempt to stop bikers driving 170 km/h :P
