.303/30-06/7.92 for the bolt guns, and M1-A in SOCOM flavour for the semi-auto

We've got a SOCOM 16, and I absolutely love it. I can't really recommend the SOCOM II. It can be nice having a quad rail to hang stuff on, but you're looking at about two extra pounds of aluminum that you probably won't use much of up front. Sure, it helps reduce the kick, but it gets fatiguing after a while (especially if you have skinny girl arms).

Also got a SiG 556 SWAT Patrol, which I like a lot as well. If I was going to blow the money on a full-auto, I'd want an MP-5. I just have a sentimental attachement to that weapon.

Those M1's are nice although I'd probably go for the standard with the Walnut stock, it'd be all about the classic look for me. Shame they don't come in 30-06 anymore.

You could probably lay your hands on one after a fashion Myn, just not new. Quick search gets a fair number of hits, in the 1300-3000 bucks range.

My section of New York bans rifle hunting, so I carry my single-shot 12 gauge 3" mag for deer season. Light, compact, and with the very limited sight distance on my thickly wooded property, I have to get the deer into bow hunting range anyway. Don't see the utility in blazing away at a moving target anyway- ammo has gotten expen$ive. If I go hunting "up North" in the Adirondacks, I now have to choose between the bolt-action Springfield model 1898 in .30-40, or my Saiga in .223/5.56. Will probably take the .30-40 for knockdown power; with semi-jacketed rounds with an expanding tip, it will do some serious damage.

As to auto vs. semiauto, would never be worth the hassle to own a full auto weapon. Would be nice to be able to legally own a semiauto shotgun with a foregrip and a drum magazine, but this is dear old New York. My Saiga is now legal only if I load no more than 8 rounds in the 10 round mag.

Pretty much the same down here, most of the places I hunt are brush. I have a cheap scope on my 700 that's zeroed out to 80 yards but I"ve never actually used it other than for target practice. Most of the deer I've taken were 50 yards or less, if you can't hit out that far with iron sights you need to practice.

NY is probably now the worst state to live in and be a gun owner. I feel for you man. If you ever consider moving take note of your neighbor to the south. No mag restrictions here, no stupid bans on "scary guns", and no hoops to jump through. You fill out the standard NICS form, they run your drivers liscense through the system, and if you pass you make your purchase and take it home. We're a great example of how you can be safe and sane at the same time.

The tax on NFA stuff is what really annoys me. I can understand and totally agree with going through an extra background check for an item like this but $200 in tax to put a $130 stock on my $200 pistol? That's some bullshit. And they ding you for that $200 for EVERY NFA item, so if I wanted to add a suppressor too that would be ANOTHER $200 in tax. $400 in tax to put accessories on a $200 pistol. Pricks.
