Really interesting how they rigged this, they actually wrapped the cables around underneath, attached them up top to the port side superstructure and when the cranes pulled the ship itself acted as the block in a block and tackle.

It's called a parbuckle. You can use the same technique to raise or lower barrels, gives a 2:1 mechanical advantage. (Or just buy a power tailgate.)
