I have a hand in hiring people for my department and I can count three instances where we were going to hire someone and didn't because of something they posted on social media. The most memorable was the guy showing off the mini pot farm he had built in his closet.

I've got two Facebook profiles. One as me and the other as that other guy that I am. While I was initially put off by the entire social media thing as a load of gimmickry and hype I've come to embrace it as actually having some use. One half of my life on Facebook, Twitter, etc. is useful for looking at talent, most especially who to avoid. The other is great for following my nieces and nephews, Church, old high school class, everybody in my real life. It's very handy if you have a large extended family that you have to keep up with.

What many still haven't figured out is that those with a crappy attitude about everything seem to share that on Facebook as well as everywhere else in life. If you have doubts about anyone and they have a Facebook account you can get to know them a lot better before you hire them just by being a "Friend" for a while. Strangely the biggest complaint most people like that seem to have is never being able to get the job they want. Hmmm...
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

I have a Facebook profile but quit posting to my Wall in late 2011. I joined long ago but only became active in 2009 to get current on what people in my high school classes were doing. I attended two different high schools and planned to attend both 25 year reunions. The reunions went fine but what I eventually learned on Facebook was that our values systems had evolved in such different directions that people wanted to argue with me about my Wall posts. As far as I am concerned, both sets of alumni have mutated into pod people. So I quit sharing anything on my Wall, deleted existing posts, and changed all settings to private. No argument can be made with no material over which to argue.

I remain active on Facebook because it has some utility. I disable News Feed for everyone but occasionally I check on select people to see how they are doing. There are a couple of Groups on which I am active. How some people manage to have any life given all their Facebook posting I have no idea.

Got to agree with you on that one. There's a certain crowd from which everything that passes through their head has to be copied to Facebook.

They should know that QSF is really the place for that.

Thanks to smartphones you can now be wired into the net pretty much where ever you go.
Know what the difference is between real life and The Matrix? In real life the idiots crawled into the tubes voluntarily.
