A real loss... :( He was a favorite author of mine, and got me hooked on the whole genre of military technical thrillers. The Hunt for Red October still remains among the best submarine stories around, bar none...

Yea, Red Storm Rising, in spite of its epic length, is a must-read for Clancy fans.

It encapsulates everything that is great about his writing. RIP.

Red October and Red Storm Rising were probably his best novels, and it should be noted that Larry Bond assisted on both :) Cardinal of the Kremlin was his best stand alone novel I thought, before things went sideways with his Ryan character :P

He was also the literary father of the flying-airliners-into-buildings style of terrorist attack.

I really enjoyed most of his books up to Rainbow Six, which I thought got a little too silly and reminiscent of the Moonraker movie. The Bear and the Dragon was all right. I have his last two books, too, but I haven't gotten around to cracking them open yet.

I still reread The Hunt for Red October every couple years, and it's fun to revisit Red Storm Rising, in part to see how far off the mark all the F-19 speculation was.

As a person "from another side" I can tell you that reading The Hunt for Red October (yes, it was translated into Russian) was very interesting in parts where Tom Clancy was describing technical details, but everything concerning the Soviet navy was nothing more than a dirty libel. Cliché, tasty for American readers. I can't blame the author, however, - he did what the audience demanded, and did it perfectly.

I heard about Mr. Clancy's passing yesterday at work. Sad news.

Loved the movies, The Hunt for Red October, and Partriot Games. Both were outstanding action thrillers that captivated you. I also enjoyed watch Clancy hosting a documentary on the Military Channel... don't recall right off the topic of the documentary, but Tom was there talking about it.

Tom Clancy certainly will be missed. Best wishes, Tom, as you turn the page to a new chapter in your journey, and best wishes to your family and friends.

Yes, he will be missed in our household also. Even my Lady Wife enjoyed his books for the suspense and intricate writing, even if he was a little too far into the technical details for her taste.

"Hunt for Red October" (both book and movie) are family favorites, and I really loved "Red Storm Rising." I also have some of his non-fiction work, such as "Armored Cav."

Just to be different, I think his best novel was "Without Remorse." Very intense drama- would love to see that made into a movie.

There's something I'd really like to hear more about. The view from the other side.

I think most of us came of age during the glory days of Ronald Reagan's reawakening of America. For someone attending a very conservative Church affiliated Southern college at the time and coming from a Navy family his books were perfect. I personally liked Red Storm Rising a lot and compared it to General Sir John Hackett's more political and speculative The Third World War. Hunt For Red October was a great read but hit me as a little too fantastic. Cardinal of the Kremlin, Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games, and Sum of All Fears are still on my shelf. Beyond all the fiction was a statement of fact that he made just before Desert Storm in an op-ed piece for the Washington Post. The media was filled daily with dire warning and predictions of how many months it would take the coalition military to overcome the vaunted Iraqi defenses when Clancy said, and I still remember it, "A US armored division under a friendly sky is a fearsome thing" and he predicted the Iraqis likely didn't have a prayer of lasting more than a few days on the ground. He wasn't all about make-believe. Great American and I enjoyed his work.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.
