Wrath of Khan - the REAL one

Postby kham » Thu Nov 28, 2013 4:27 pm

Battle of the Mutara Nebula

THIS is what a battle between capital starships is supposed to look like. No dumbass DS9-era dogfighting or 'wall of ships' knucklead stuff. You think Bismarck and Hood duked it out like that, or more like this?

2:40 Kirk+Spock = awesome
3:20 Exaggerated :D
9:32 Missed!
10:05 Evasive Starboard!
Hit, but Enterprise's Port Main Phaser Banks have a retort
11:55 2-dimensional thinking....
13:03 Hello, asshole

16:02 Genesis countdown -- you just knew what Spock was going to do the instant you saw him.

I loved the battle scenes in "The Wrath of Khan." The battle scenes in the Star Wars movies always seem to be trying to overwhelm the viewer with special effects. The way the ships were portrayed in "The Wrath of Khan" made them appear majestic, particularly on a big, wide screen at a theater. For me, this made the battle scenes far more compelling. I have the feeling that, if the technology had been available at the time, this is what the battles in the original series would've looked like.

Speaking of TOS, some years ago, I saw the USS Enterprise model they used in that series. It's on display at the Smithsonian (National Air & Space Museum) in Washington, DC. I must say how surprised at how small it was, and how it looked like it was made out of cardboard. Even then, it was amazing what could be done with a TV camera.

I've often wondered how the crews from "The Next Generation" and "DS9" would've handled the tribbles.

Oh yes!!!! The movie that saved Star Trek!!!!! (at least until Next Gen came out, but I won't go there) Without a doubt, the best of all the Trek movies.

Sheldon needs rechecked for insanity; 20 years in the past is no yardstick.....

So many dismiss at first as just an action movie, but it really is not. There are too many elements from Milton, and Melville to do that. Plus, stakes that really matter, with the main characters. Nicholas Meyer did a fantastic job with this, and wanted a great movie so much, he passed up a writer's credit for years.

John, DS9 is the only real new series that really handles TOS properly -- including the tribbles in the 30th anniversary special was a very nice touch. Plus, The Sisko  The man risked getting his ass in major trouble JUST to get Jim Kirk's autograph (no surprise Sisko is the captain he is, with Kirk as his hero -- Janeway couldn't carry his shit in a bag with a handle and instructions)

YES! :D :D :D :D

Still unbeaten after all these years.... my personal fav ST film, bar none.Wept many a manly tear over the finale with Kirk and Spock.. thrilled to the best, most intense ship to ship combat ever depicted... and Khan? Ever been a cooler, more crazed and classier villain than him?

I could go on... but now I have to rewatch my copy of the film again....KHAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!

Best one them all for sure.

That said, the new one was awesome though. Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing!

It really puts all other Trek movies under the microscope. There have been some good ones, but it is THE standard which awesome is measured against. Everything just fit perfectly. Even Kirk's apartment, the little nautical touches, he and Bones sitting around the fire having a couple drinks - that was a place you could very easily see as REAL for those characters. Although I would have given scotch instead of Romulan ale as a birthday present :D It drew on the entire body of TOS, even Spock's gift -- Kirk loving old books, something he picked up from Sam Cogley way back from he was on trial, fer pete's sakes :)

OH, YES! This movie AND the battle scenes, to me, ARE the BEST when it came to the Star Trek Original Series! Although, to me, the ideal battle scene would've been between Star Fleet and the Klingon Empire, this worked SO well!

When it comes to the Star Trek Original Series, only, "Balance of Terror," comes close to a great battle scene. After that, you have to look towards Star Trek Next Generation's, "Yesterday's Enterprise," for a good battle scene.

Of the Star Trek Original Series movies, this one ranks as my all-time favorite!

Definitely the best of the Star Trek movies. #2 on my list would be First Contact.

Plus, ST:TWoK boasts a score so good that James Horner self-plagarized himself with it twice for Aliens and Avatar.
