Interesting- the differences between the AR-15/M-16 and the AK-47 and its offspring are emblematic of the differences between American and Russian technology. The Russians seem to incorporate the KISS principle ("Keep it simple, stupid!") and Murphy's Law into their technology. Crude, but it works- pound on it, drop it, throw water, mud, snow or dust at it- it just keeps chugging along. The Russians are perfectly capable of machining to fine tolerances and using reductive engineering (designing an object with exactly enough material and strength to do its job) - they choose not to.

At the other extreme are the Germans, who build incredible technology- all of which requires a team of trained specialists to keep it operating.

Yes, sad news... But his designs are still living and will live for some more time; memories about him will live very long; and let's remember that he lived more than 30 years longer than average lifespan in Russia... So, it was a happy life
