The first time I remember being exposed to quicksand was when I watched The Brave Little Toaster when I was about 4. There's a scene where all of the main characters sink into quicksand one by one, and I can remember asking my parents, "What is that stuff?" "Why are they sinking in it?" "What happens when they go under?" "Do we have any stuff like that around here?"

I'll post the scene over in the nuggets section.

I rememberthe exact PF Flyers commercial (mid 1960's). "Look out Sue, there's quicksand ahead - the chimp tries to warn her - but it's too late and she is sinking fast." She blows a whistle and the boy (name forgotten) comes and pulls her out about knee deep. It was still a fixer in my memory.

I have the faintest memories of that one and I've been looking for it for years. On the occasion that I've found "lost" scenes from my very early years it's interesting what has changed in my memory over time. I'd love to see what this one brings back.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

"I don't know" is the simple answer but I have gone over it in my mind over the last half century (almost). Everyone quotes scenes with "Hollywood" quicksand, including myself, but this stuff is far removed from real quicksand.
Real quicksand is a stiff unyielding substance, locking it's victims in place until another force of nature - rising tide, hypothermia, dehydration etc closes in for the kill. Hollywood quicksand is a loose liquid, pulsating around the victim.
Real quicksand occurs over a wide expanse - estuary, mudflats etc. Hollywood quicksand occurs in small discrete pits with sides unfeasibly steep, only just wide enough so that the victim cannot reach the side.
Real quicksand is unbearably cold, sapping the heat from the victim so quickly that hypothermia is a real killer. No one complains about the cold in Hollywood quicksand.
So we have a soft, deep, warm, pulsating hole.- Sound familiar? Heterosexual males that, for some reason, see Hollywood quicksand as an analogy for the Female vagina might well be aroused at the thought of a woman ensnared in it.
Any thoughts?

I don't know.

I have had the interest for as long as I can remember. While I can pinpoint a memory of seeing a scene on TV and being aroused by it when I was three, I do not remember being at all surprised by it. Instead, it was familiar.

As far as I can tell, my interest in quicksand simply always was.

You raise thoughts about a question I've been wanting to put to the group for a long time. I think it might best be done in another topic though. Stay tuned.

I suppose my route to quicksand started with Honey I Shrunk the Kids film. The bit where Amy falls into the muddy water and the scene of her head and hair sinking under has always been stuck in my head (and believe me when I say this, but I used to think she wore a pink dressing gown when I was younger, for some reason).

My first true knowledge of quicksand came in 2000. There was a program on British TV and there was a bit where a couple of men were fighting. In the struggle, one of them goes into some quicksand and the other guy tries reaching out to him and pull him out. But the doomed guy just “sits” there not wanting his help and stares at him before he sinks under via a POV shot.

It wasn’t until 2004 or 2005 that I started looking it up and finally seeing quicksand in all shapes and forms and since then I’ve always had imaginations of certain characters in certain costumes sinking into a pit (e.g. Padme Amidala in her Arena outfit, Elizabeth Swann in her British uniform or Ashley Hammond from Power Rangers in Space in her ship uniform, the list goes on so I’ll stop there) or alternate scenarios like the title character from Captive Girl sinking all the way under.

The thought of a woman being engulfed has been quite interesting to me for a long while and will probably be that way for a long time. I don’t mind if they get rescued or not, but a complete sinking is always a big bonus in my eyes.

This wasn’t written or even posted with the greatest of confidence since I’m very hesitant, but this is the honest truth of why I’m here in the first place. Sorry if it was long, but this was me getting it all off my chest.

PS: Where is the best place on the forum to ask questions of a non-quicksand nature? I have a couple of sketchy memories that I would appreciate some help with. One of them is music related but results from google or ask yahoo have been unsatisfactory and the other is TV/Film related. I have some details, but I don't know what the song or TV show/film were.

I think this is a nice post. Thank you for sharing.

The Off-Topic forum sounds like a good place for your questions. :)
