From the point of view of a producer I will provide an opinion that might go both ways in terms of pleasing those who keep mentioning tar.

First, the use of real tar is unequivically, unambiguous, defnitely, not going to be attempted by any sane producer.

However, quicksand video is about illusion. Its story-telling, not filming real encounters. At least for me that's what it is. Therefore, doing a tar pit scene is a question of finding a suitable facilmile for tar and not about risking the real thing.

Hey, I fantasize myself sinking in tar pits too, even doing it on Second Life.

But to try it in real life? I'm not that stupid. The only "safe" way is to wear that protective suit. Even then you'd be lucky to get out of it.

Star Trek TNG used a tar-like substance in the episode 'Skin of Evil', where Tasha Yar dies (after 25 years I don't think this qualifies as a spoiler lol!). At one point, riker is sucked into the 'tar', and completely enveloped. Here is a Youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AljAHaTI2mA (It gets interesting at about 4:35).

According to the Star Trek Memory Alpha web site, the substance was made of methylcellulose (Metamucil) and black printer's ink. Might be worth a try for those interested in a tar sink... Link to the Memory Alpha article: http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Armus

I bet our producers could do a far better job of something like that than TNG did. ;)
