So I guess things have me wondering, What was everyone's first exposure to sinking/quicksand/mud (insert substance here)

Hmmm, an interesting question though a bit vague as to specifics.

If you mean exposure to the concept, then for me it was various episodes of Saturday morning television, targeted at me at the age I was then, in the late 1950s. This would include movies such as Tarzan, Lone Ranger, and various other adventure flicks.

If you mean exposure to mud, then that for me would be a lot of play with a running hose and mud in my backyard as a kid. We lived on an unpaved, dead end street that had ruts and puddles in many places and I do remember discovering that if you rocked back and forth from one booted foot to the other you could quickly mad mud six or eight inches deep.

If you mean exposure to seeing real deep mud and/or quicksand, then that came as an adult, with the interest in the concept of quicksand already developed. I saw soft, bubbling clay at Yellowstone and tidal quicksand at Truro, NS and at Turnagain Arm in Alaska.

Or maybe you meant something else again?

Honestly, I am not sure. I do remember making "Barbie" sink between the couch cushions so that "GI Joe" could rescue her. And we moved out of that house before I started Kindergarten. We did have a TV then, so it may have been the famous "Electric Company" scene that was taken from an old silent movie.

Now, as to personally, there was that one time I was wandering along the creek looking for mud, found a likely spot, jumped in- and promptly got sucked in past my boot tops, and couldn't touch bottom. There's still no feeling like that- just last year I was in my own woods and found a muddy spot that had been covered over with wind-blown leaves. Wasn't deep, but for a few seconds, I got that special feeling- the adrenalin rush and the tightness halfway between my bellybutton and my spine.

I remember seeing a clip where a damsel was sinking... pulled out a pistol and somehow shot a vine so it dropped down for her to pull herself up... I was fascinated!

my 1st mud experience was age about 5-tried to walk through some muddy clay,got stuck & lost my wellies. I was frightened to begin with but soon calmed down 2nd time was aged 11 .Went exploring a silted up lake wearing swim briefs. Found a mudbank that was about thigh deep & after paddling around for a bit felt an urge to lie down in the mud. after a while I found I had a massive hard on The rest is history as the books say!!!

With me it was those wonderful 80's TV shows. I,m hoping those days have a comeback soon!

I guess I was 7 or 8 (or maybe even 6), and saw the quicksand scenes in Get Smart, The Rifleman and a version of Hound of the Baskervilles, in a seemingly short span of time (and later on, Gentle Ben (I think), and Lassie (rerun) (though I turned it off before Porky (?) got stuck in the quicksand)). It freaked me out, and my parents would change the channel before I saw the end (which just made it worse). I also remember "Valley of Mystery" being on TV, and remember my mom saying something like "That's the woman that fell (or was caught) in the quicksand" (I didn't see it; I think I was in my room reading or something); it freaked me out even to hear her say it. It turned out the intrigue me, and then fascinate me, but I could watch quicksand scenes only by myself, and only those involving women (knowing I was TG back then (didn't know what it was called, but I knew I was), I wished it was me, as a woman, of course). Thank goodness for the advent of the VCR, and me being able to get my own TV. I rented a post office box just so I could buy Dave's female QS tapes, and watched them religiously, until I destroyed them for fear of being "caught" (both my mom and my sister (love and miss you both, RIP), loved to either catch me doing something, or find the evidence thereof after the fact, and nail me with it; another loooooong story for another day, one not ending in "Y" )). For years, the phrase "caught in quicksand" would cause my heart to pound out of my chest, and I'd have to go off by myself, to let my imagination run wild, and avoid being interrogated by my parents as to what was wrong with me (one of the reasons why I'm in therapy now - my parents, not quicksand ). Sorry for the long post; I don't get on here much, and when I do, I guess everything gushes out all at once.
