The problem with that kind of thinking is that it assumes one side is better than the other. I'd rather get the standard free market capitalist fucking than be the colony of an imperial neighbor who has dominated me for centuries. I doubt seriously this is a revolution inspired nearly so much by local feelings as it is locals being exploited by Putin so he can regain the good old days. It might not be polite to ask or even permitted here any longer but I'd love to hear what Billie Bonce has to say about it.

In the end there are a lot of dead innocent people because big toys were in the wrong hands. Very sad and a great loss. Nothing will be made easier by this for either side.

I don't like Putin but on the other hand I don't like the EU coming in to a country and installing a puppet government that votes for that country to join the EU, which is what started this mess in the first place.

I guess I missed the part where the EU was behind thousands of Ukrainians camping out in mid-winter to protest their President pulling the plug on a treaty because Putin called him for his orders

Well said, Duncan. Personally, I don't care who pulled the trigger or why. Just bring me their head(s) on a platter. Or, just bring me whole war criminals- I'll gladly remove the heads myself. For Putin, the lives of a few "rebels" should be a small price to pay for the US staying out of his business in Ukraine; and were I President of the US or Malaysia I would put it in those terms.

As to President Putin, I called this when he first came to power, in front of witnesses. I said he was going to grab as much political power as the Russian people would let him get away with, then put as much of the old Soviet Empire back together as he could manage without starting WWIII. Much as I despise and distrust the man, he is one heck of a leader. Smart, cunning, ruthless, and above all a Russian patriot. He really does want what's best for Russia and her people. Last time I checked, their "primitive extraction economy" was growing faster than ours, and the average Russian is probably better off than at any time in history.

Right now it looks like our friend Vladimir Vladimirovich Rurikov is funding and supplying rebels who are bent on overrunning a US-friendly democratic country. The last time we got mixed up in that, we were so afraid of pissing off a nuclear armed Soviet Union that we botched the whole thing, and crawled off in defeat after 58,000 KIA and another 2,000 or so still MIA. I'm no peacenik, but I don't want us going down that particular road ever again.
