The actor and director Richard Attenborough died earlier today, aged ninety.
As an actor he appeared in dozens of films beginning with In Which we Serve (1942). His best role was probably as Pinkie in Brighton Rock, though most will know him for The Great Escape or Jurassic Park.
As a director, he gave us Oh What a Lovely War, Gandhi and Chaplin, amongst others.
And the weird thing is that earlier today, guided by some whim, I watched The Great Escape again - and was actually looking at him on screen when the news broke.
