Point of the exercise was Toms vs Gun-only armed opponents , 2v2 fights on at the merge. Which from the look of things is where things went bad for the F-14s. To me looked like they blew it, or lost sight of the Vipers because that wasn't pretty 
You can almost hear the critique "your lead is a cloud of hair, teeth and eyeballs, and you got another 16 trapped at your 6 o'clock; what the hell were you thinking? Bug out and run, dammit"
