The battle now enters its second phase.
A 14" round from Hiei blows apart San Francisco's navigation bridge SF, on fire, is a well lit target.
Callaghan (on TBS): "We want the big ones. Get the big ones!"
After 24 minutes of madness, Adm. Abe has had enough. He retreats.

At H.: Gunfire from Iron Bottom Sound stops. People can see distant fire on the water.

Ok folks, here's his plan: he managed to save the original posting list, so starting tomorrow morning, from go-time, we enter the wayback machine for a do-over. Will see how it goes, obviously not going to repost old attachments, but new stuff and at some point, it will flow smooth again. So offset one day....

Here we go again...

4 searchlights from Hiei hit Sterett - effectively blinding anybody who sees them. Her radar gunnery director is inside and unaffected. DD Cushing is on a hair trigger. When the lights go on, they open fire on DD Amatsukaze - 2,000 yards away. Hiei searchlights Atlanta. Atlanta turns to avoid the 4 DDs in front of her who turned.
CA San Francisco hit by Hiei searchlights. SF shoots off some starshells that illuminate IJN DDs. SF starts violent evasive maneuvers. Akatsuki searchlights Cushing. O'Bannon's guns are already aimed at Akatsuki. "Get that searchlight" Capt. Kiikawa on Yudachi, sees gunfire where he used to be. He orders Yudachi to charge back at top speed - 40 mph. DD Harusame follows .The big target on Aaron Ward's radar is Hiei! Searchlights on, Ward opens fire at 7,000 yards. Amatsukaze and Yukikaze, under fire from Cushing, turn right and hide behind CL Nagara! Capt. Hoover on Helena has been locked onto targets for 8 minutes - he's not going to wait any longer.
CA Portland, #7 in the column, is far enough back to avoid the chain reaction swerves starting with Cushing. Akatsuki (and Inazuma?) return Atlanta's fire and hit her with 8 5" rounds. They hit a gun mount, ammo starts blowing up.
Fletcher, at long range, shoots at a J. ship (Nagara?) Last in line, Fletcher misses most of the early action.DD Monssen sees gunfire 10,000 yards ahead. As Monssen advances she has a ringside seat of the battle. A Monssen gunner thinks he sees a BB 4,000 yards away. Torp officer Lassen sees it too - and fires 5 torps. Barton's behind Aaron Ward. When Ward reverses engines Barton, instead of evading, cuts her engines. Don't do that during combat! Monssen catches up with Barton and dodges 3 torps! One by just 15 yards!Cole, on Fletcher, see Barton explode. It's a knife fight! He acts independently from then on. Fletcher kicks into top speed, 43 mph! Barton 6 months old, 6 minutes of combat... gone. Sinks so fast that, of the men inside the ship, only 1 lives.
Portland's target is 6,200 yards away. First salvo... hits Akatsuki! Portland shelled in an aircraft hanger - loses power to some guns.Helena's 5" director finds another target to the left - 6,200 yards away. DD Laffey gets the "Odd Ships Fire..." order. Portland's 2nd salvo hits but, with *everybody* shooting at Akatsuki, nobody knows who blew her up. (1937 pic) O'Bannon has to dodge Sterett again after Sterett loses steering. Sterett blocks O'Bannon's line of fire to Akatsuki.
Atlanta hit by a long lance!

DD Sterett gets the "Odd Ships Fire..." order. Her guns were aimed at Hiei but the order says aim the other direction. Callaghan: "Odd numbered ships fire to starboard; even numbered ships fire to port." ....
Hiei is under fire from DDs. She turns right. This gives Cushing a good angle for her torpedoes. She fires 6 at Hiei! San Francisco is pumping shot after shot into Akatsuki. As soon as Cushing fires her torps, 2 J. DDs open fire on her - one on each side.Atlanta drifts into SF's line of fire with Hiei. SF hits Atlanta with 9 8" shells. All above waterline but they inflict serious damage.DD Sterett opens fire on CL Nagara, 4,000 yards away.
**Ships now firing in all directions and anything moving - chaos would be relaxed...

Hara on Amatsukaze sees DD Barton 5,000 yards away
Laffey and Akatsuki go their own ways. Suddenly, there's nothing going on around Laffey.
Helena has fired 175 6" shells and 20 5" in just 6 minutes of combat.
Barton is 3,000 yards away. Hara on Amatsukaze: Ready torpedoes! Fire!
Portland gets the cease fire order. Ceases
Aaron ward gets the cease fire order. Ceases. Right then starshells burst overhead. Ward's lookouts can see everything. Hara on Amatsukaze sees DD Yudachi charge between (Juneau?) and DD Aaron Ward. O'Bannon gets the cease fire order. Pauses for a few seconds and then keeps shooting Hiei. "Hits on Hiei are carving pieces out of herlike a knife cutting a block of butter!" A ship bursts out of the darkness headed directly towards Aaron Ward at tremendous speed. CRAP! Here comes Hiei headed straight for Laffey!
J. have left Cushing alone for a few minutes. She is able to fire at a ship and launch 2 torps. No hits.Portland sees a new target too good to pass up at 7,000 yards! Shoots it.
Monssen turns right - sees a J. DD pass in the other direction less than a 1,000 yards to the right.
Fletcher catches up with Monssen just in time to encounter the 4 torps that missed Monssen! Starshells burst above Monssen. For some reason, McCombs thinks these are USN starshells.

(and the next 16 minutes) Fletcher zooms up the path of the column - shooting at targets as they appear on her radar. on Fletcher. Cole to Wylie: You ought to see this. It looks like the 4th of July out here. On Monssen. Fires are out of control. She's taken over 40 5" hits. McCombs: Abandon Ship. Aaron Ward is search lighted. Ward tries to evade for 2 minutes. The light is so bright Ward can't id the ship.Fires on Cushing are out of control. She has no power, no engines, no electricity. She can't fight and she can't run.Sterett takes a shell hit that cuts a cable to the steering gear. Capt. Coward starts steering on engines without missing a beat.Hiei returns fire from from San Francisco. She fires 4 14" rounds, then 4 more.San Francisco can now see Hiei. She fires from 2,200 yards. 8 of 9 shells miss! Recently discovered film from the bridge of the Hiei!
seems legit....

DD O'Bannon blocks Sterett's line of fire to Nagara. Sterett aims at Hiei - and her radar is knocked out.San Francisco corrects her aim and starts rapid fire on Hiei. Sterett aims at Hiei visually and... gets a cease fire order from Callaghan over TBS.
The upper part of Hiei is a shambles. Her guns must be firing independently and her aim suffers. DD Inazuma zips a few 5" rounds at San Francisco. Hits a Quad 1.1" mount - heavy casualties. Inazuma looks for closer ships to shoot.A *BIG* explosion from shells falling short of San Francisco. Hello Kirishima! (**oh,yeah...there's that OTHER BB out here.....)
Callaghan (on TBS): "We want the big ones. Get the big ones!" (**Smile, Mike Foxtrot....)
Hiei's 6" guns find their range and hit San Francisco many times. They're tearing up SF's 5" gun mounts.
A 14" round from Hiei blows apart San Francisco's navigation bridge. Callaghan was killed by the shellfire wreaking havoc on San Francisco. San Francisco takes another 14" hit. Steering and backup steering are out. SF is out of control at 21 mph. Only survivor in the conning tower, Quartermaster Floyd Rodgers, manages to take control of San Francisco . San Francisco staggers out of the central melee.
Hiei fires back at Portland. The first salvo passes over the top of Portland. 2nd salvo has 2 hits! ANOTHER 14" shell hits the top of San Francisco's conning tower. Rodgers: We've lost steering and engine control. (over the next 5 minutes) A patchwork control system allows San Francisco to steer out of the battle area. After gnawing on Hiei, Sterett's been away from the action for 15 minutes.
O'Bannon is 1,800 yards from Hiei. Nagara starts shooting O'Bannon. After her drive-by of Hiei, O'Bannon is alone in the dark. Lookouts see 6 burning ships in the distance.Portland's first 2 salvos score numerous hits the target - which is now on fire. CL Nagara has turned back and goes after Cushing. 2 long lances just miss Aaron Ward 2 long lances just miss Monssen 2 long lances hit Barton - she explodes! Barton splits in two.Laffey fires 5 torps at Hiei. Her 5" guns are pounding Hiei at very close range. Kirishima fires at San Francisco. Shells fall short. Portland EATS a long lance on her right side near the rear! 2 props blown off, rudder gone, and huge section of hull plating bent outward like a scoop. She can only make circles to the right....

A 20mm gunner on Laffey empties his entire magazine right through a Hiei porthole.
After dashing in front of Aaron Ward, Yudachi turns and is on a parallel course with Juneau.
Hiei comes into view of Portland. Screw the damage - you can't pass up a shot at a battleship!
Hara on Amatsukaze has his torps reloaded and is looking for more targets. He sees CLAA Juneau! O'Bannon sees the bow of ship floating in front of her (Barton) Aaron Ward sees a big target off to her left. She prepares a torpedo shot. Laffey heads for Savo Island - wants to reorganize away from the melee . Capt. Parker, on Cushing: "Abandon Ship." The battle moves away from Portland. She keeps turning in circles. Yudachi keeps running on a course parallel to the USN column. Eventually she finds Portland. Fires 8 torps. All miss
Laffey sees Kirishima 10,000 yards away. Discretion is the better part of valor and all that. Laffey, without search radar, is surprised by 2 DDs at 3,000 yards. Laffey aims at Asagumo, then Murasame as they pass to the right. Laffey didn't see the *3rd* DD, Samidare, on her other side.
Amatsukaze heads NW. Hara sees Hiei on fire, heads that way to help out.
Laffey's 5" guns set Samidare on fire. Asagumo and Murasame vivisect Laffey with rapid 5" fire. Laffey has 2 more 5" guns knocked out.The 3 J. DDs move on, leaving Laffey behind. Kirishima donates a 14" round!

Hara on Amatsukaze sees a huge red flash to the right. Someone has blown up.
Laffey is adrift, no power. 3 or 4 fires burning out of control Crew uses 5" shell casings to improvise a bucket brigade. Inadequate.San Francisco fires at Amatsukaze. Too close, her guns can't point that low.
Amatsukaze is in trouble. Rudder jammed, all gun mounts frozen by hydraulic failure. And Helena is spraying 6" shells at her rapid-fire.
Aaron Ward fires at the searchlight with all 4 5" guns. 6" and 14" shells comes back. Oh, it's Kirishima!
Amatsuzkaze turns in a circle. Kirishima fires 14" salvo at San Francisco from 2,500 yards. MISS! Aaron Ward almost collides with Sterett.Fletcher is at the end of her return run. She spots a BIG target doing 23 mph SE. away from the main fight. It's torpedo time.Fletcher runs at full speed to get into torp position. She can see the ship firing big guns and 3 ships firing back at her.Another searchlight is on Aaron Ward - from 3,000 yards to her right. At Aaron Ward. Searchlights off - all 3 ships stop shooting. Now Aaron Ward has starshells overhead. *Another* searchlight is on her. (from the left). Fletcher fires torps at 7,300 yards. That's a 6 minute run time - Fletcher hangs around to see what happens. A single torp passes 50 yards in front of Aaron Ward from left to right. Fletcher sees 2 large explosions! Followed by a big fire. Aaron Ward loses steering control. She continues on engine steering.Aaron Ward loses engine power. The water for her turbines is gone. A bucket brigade is organized to refill but it will take hours.Fletcher has torpedoed.... who knows!

Sterett fires 2 torps and all 4 5" guns fire AP. The first 8 shots hit!
San Francisco is trying to find an empty patch of ocean. Instead she finds BB Kirishima!
Ward's evasive maneuver brings her into sight range of another ship. They can't id her.
San Francisco has taken *45* naval gun hits. Mostly above the waterline
The brilliant light from the burning Yudachi illuminates Sterett. She takes many shell hits from the left. On fire, half her guns knocked out, Sterett gets the hell out of Dodge. The blazing Sterett heads up Lengo channel at high speed.Away from the battle, San Francisco slows down to reduce the water flowing through her many, many holes. Fires rage all over the ship.A single torpedo, from God knows where, narrowly misses Sterett. Reinhardt Keppler has working on the many seriously injured sailors on San Francisco. He has hidden his serious wounds. Now he collapses from blood loss and soon dies.

Sterett's steering jams. Capt. Coward has to pull every trick in the book to keep Sterett heading East.

As Helena tears into Amatsukaze, she sees a *big* ship to her right - Kirishima!
Something is wrong with Kirishima. She keeps missing SF at short range. San Francisco is missing Kirishima - but SF has excuses!
San Francisco gets out of Helena's line of fire and Helena finds another target ...
After a couple of minutes Kirishima turns away from SF and leaves at high speed.
Captain Hank on Laffey has the crew abandon ship.Nagara passes by Laffey again. After aiming her guns, she keeps going. Laffey is no longer worth shooting.Helena starts to escort SF away from the insanity.
Hank walks around the burning Laffey - making sure everyone left. Rear ammo magazine explodes - Captain Hank is MIA. Laffey sinks quickly. Helena escorts SF from 800 yards behind.

OK, the creator of the original day-by-day thread is unable to continue, but while sad, this not the end

Using my own knowledge, library and such, will attempt to proceed. Certainly not minute by minute, but as best as able. Any commentary from this point would be ok, and not break the flow of things

With the action largely over, the shattered remains of both Task Forces retired, at least those able to do so. Abe, wounded and somewhat shaken, remained aboard Hiei as she staggered off to the north of Savo Island. Having his flag captain turned into a pile of body parts before his eyes, wounded himself, then having the entire forward superstructure of his flagship collapse on top of him like a demolished building probably screwed him up somewhat. Hara, and Amatsukaze, managed to dodge out of Helena's servo-mechanical rage and steering drunkenly with her engines, made her way back up the Slot. Atlanta, her engine room immolated, Scott dead, and shot to pieces equally by Japanese fire and San Francisco... was fighting to stay afloat by jettisoning loose gear, torpedoes, half her anchors and anything they didn't need. Drifting with the current, they were headed towards the beach, eventually managing to fetch up on her remaining anchor a couple miles off Lunga Point. With the dawn, help began to arrive in a stream of Mike boats to ferry wounded ashore and DC parties from Cactus, and Tulagi. Power was partially restored, but the damage she had suffered was just too much. Late in the afternoon, her remaining crew was taken off, and demolition charges fired to scuttle the wreck. Portland, spent most of the day spinning in slow circles, taking the time to blow up the smouldering remains of Yudachi but also rousing Hiei from her slumber. Luckily, Henderson was also awake, starting a day-long string of sorties that eventually put the old BB on the bottom. Portland, with the tug Bobolink, a score of Mike boats and luck, eventually slogged over to Tulagi, managing to get there after dark, in spite of the morons driving PT boats there that tried to kill her...

Throughout the day, the survivors of the force still able to steam, had been making their way south towards Esprito Santo. Hoover, aboard Helena is OTC at this point, leading the ragged line home. San Francisco, riddled by over 45 hits of all calibres is more or less seaworthy, but has no comms or signal capability beyond a single blinker light. Juneau, with a broken keel and sundry other damage is structurally holding together, but probably wouldn't be if the sea was anything but flat calm.
Juneau's surgeon has just come aboard SF, bitching about having to come, until looks at the shambles topside, and the hands trying to hose off and sweep down the body parts scattered into every nook and cranny of the former flagship. He will assist in emergency surgery on Captain Cassin Young, in a failed attempt to save his life. His wounds will be mortal.

Around 11am lookouts on Helena spot what looks like a disturbance in the water, like a porpise breaching; a second is sighted with a fin, quickly resolving into a trio of torpedo wakes, closing fast. Helena, and SF both take evasive action, but Juneau, doesn't get the word. With no means to communicate, SF can only watch. A signalman on Helena, in the process of taking a blinker message from Juneau, has his telescope on his counterpart but no time to react. The ocean seems to shiver, with the signalman suddenly vanishing, as if snatched away by a giant hand. He takes the telescope away and sees the man flying high into the air. The blast that sunders Juneau is without compare, utterly shattering, raising a pilar of smoke over 600 feet into the air, throwing debris in all directions; SF is hit by thick metal plates, smashing into her superstructure. One of her complete 5" gun mounts soars through an arc that splashes into Laffey's wake barely 100' astern.
A second, underwater explosion finishes the obliteration, leaving not a stick or spar in sight. With only one functioning DD for ASW work, Hoover orders the force to proceed at best speed south. From his perspective, no one could have survived. But of course, there were some. He signaled a patroling B-17 to relay the loss, and send search ships. This was dutifully done, but as you will see later, with tragic consequences. The Sullivan brothers were aboard, and unlike the movies, not all just killed in a blink....
