Every single gimmick has built-in flaws; a double-bladed lightsabre requires extreme skill to avoid dismembering self or killing self to exploit the advantages; even then, the weakness (eg-inner ring) can be exploited, as Obi-Wan did dueling Maul.

Dooku's higher blade speed and fencing style was eventually overcome by Anakin's pure power strokes of equal speed.

Grevious and his quadro-spin bullshit lasted about, what? 30 seconds against Obi-Wan, a Soresu Master, before he started lopping limbs off....

Tricks and Gags, will not save your ass against a real swordsman. Obi-Wan was the best of the best, because Soresu depended on defense/riposte, until your opponent did something stupid, then you cut him in half

This pretty much invalidates the entire original trilogy as fluffy Disney bullshit, as the Empire was never portrayed as anything even approaching competent. Sure, they could build good ships and equipment, but they couldn't find and train good crews and troops to save their lives.

It was more of an issue of death by micromanagement then actual incompetance. When you force choke your minions to death for making minor mistakes nobody wants to step up, stand out or lead.

Then I guess those guys who liquified the crew of the blockade runner like paper targets in the 2nd scene of the movie were Imperial Propaganda then. Or Obi-Wan talking about the sandcrawler damage. Or the Battle of Hoth.

Sure, lets not squash the rebs like bugs, but you dont get good by fighting retards. Which means, if and when, they ever encounter someone who doesn't screw around, or have an agenda, they should seriously get their asses kicked. You have to have a serious threat. Otherwise, you are reduced to the level of the Super Friends for credibility....

Is that the light-cheese-grater?

One other thing occurred to me;
during the Battle of Yavin, the rebs pretty much had their way , losing only 1 we saw on screen to the defensive fire, and zero in the trench where it was more confined. Tarkin had thousands of TIEs but considered the threat insignificant. Vader didn't. He launched his personal squadron and they cut the rebels to ribbons. Three, 3 , count 'em survived. Luke, Wedge, some guy in a Y-Wing. That was it. Over 90% losses. Sure , they lived and blew up the Death Star. But as missions go, its not one you'd want to redo. And if the Falcon hadnt shown up, well....

Yea but then....
"LOOK OUT!!"
*sound of TIE Fighters Colliding*

Or remember the time an entire platoon of Storm Troopers got their asses kicked by the Care Bears?

It seems to me that the Imperial forces were living off their reputation and past glories, because most of what was shown on screen was nothing to write to Coruscant about. Obi Wan's words about stormtrooper marksmanship certainly wasn't borne out in the in combat later on. When attacking a small cargo vessel, the TIE fighter pilots could have easily attacked along the Falcon's unarmed x- and y-axes, but just couldn't resist attacking along the quad-laser-defended z-axis. Somehow, two star destroyers managed to collide while chasing the very same small freighter. And to top things off, the quarter-million-plus-man crew of a super star destroyer somehow lost complete control of their ship when its relatively tiny bridge was taken out by an errant A-wing, veered wildly off course, and managed to crash bow-first into the Death Star. The Battle of the Teddy Bears' Picnic has already been mentioned, so I won't go there.

Yeah, the boarding party pasted the crew of Tantive IV but good, but I attribute that more to narrow corridors and a high volume of fire than real competence. The Imperials did pretty well ON Hoth, but their fleet failed to stop a single rebel ship from escaping.

Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see the Imperials depicted as competent, badass professionals. I just think it's a stretch to say that they were portrayed that way in the original trilogy.

There's something in one of the Battlefront games about a rebellion on Kamino, apparently the cloner guys get sick of working for Palpatine and try to make their own clone army to overthrow the Empire, but get their asses kicked. The guys who know how to make the clones are destroyed or it makes the Emperor not trust clones or some crap so they start phasing them out and recruiting regular humans, and they're so desperate for warm bodies they take anyone with a mean disposition who can fit in the armor.

Which explains the bumbling asshat brigade. :D

They have been retconning explanations for decades, so thats one more :P

One of the more reasonable ones lately, is that the Grand Army Troopers, aside from the rapid growth modifications, had those damned biochips. And if YOU could program them for one conditioned response, then SOMEONE ELSE might think thats a cool idea, why didn't I think of it? Palpy was a paranoid asshole, that comes from the job description. By the time in Rebels, and the original film, the number I saw was claiming around 40% of Stormtroopers were clone stock based on the original Fett template, but not anywhere near as well trained; no commandos; no ARC Troopers.
