Not fond of .223 myself so far. Tried using empty soda cans and then water-filled soda bottles for plinking. Shooting .22 WMR from a sweet Henry lever action and .223 Remington from my Saiga, the rounds went straight through the targets without knocking them over. :( Very frustrating. Will have to come up with some better plinking targets somehow.
The M1903 Springfield (.30-40 Krag, ammo way too expensive for plinking) tended to explode full soda bottles. Much more energy transfer. And of course you always have to put a 12 gauge slug into a water-filled gallon milk jug, just to watch the explosion. 8-)

Get some bulk M193 or M855 and try it out on a steel plate. Satisfying dings and you'll have a neat piece of abstract art when you're finished. 8-)
