bummer... hope it all works out

Who can say - but thank-you for the sentiment. I'm not actually dying (any more than we all are), but my life is not a bed of roses right now.

Incidentally, I've received a review on Amazon. A total stinker. Which is fair enough, I suppose; but I was mainly panned for basis all the pieces around the same natural hazard - which was the whole point of the book, anyway. Oh well.

Holy shit.....someobody take away this dude's thesarus before he hurts himself.
Honestly not sure if trolling or just really stupid. I'd reply back "Sorry for disappointing you, I'm sure your published book of short stories for sale on a major online retailer must be so much better than mine, could you let me know what it's called?". :D

Haters live to hate. Best not to respond to this reviewers drivel. He's probably hoping to cause a comment avalanche from even a small response from you. Best not to give him one.

However, I noticed that the disgruntled reviewer gave a list of titles of other novels, but I don't know if he meant that they all contained quicksand scenes, or just "dated" material, some of which contain quicksand. :?

Come on, it is all as dated and on-the-nose as ever; we've all seen wayyyy too much of that stuff on global TV, movies, anime, video games, YouTube, internet, and even especially in way too many book novels of recent, recent years (that also feature such scenes in them, mind!) such as "Choose Your Own Autobiography" by Neil Patrick Harris (2014), "Alien Collective" by Gini Koch (2014), "The Impious Sister: A Story of Jealously and Deceit" by Mike Pappas (2014), "Beware the Wolf" by Laura Prior (2013), "Night of the Dark Horse" by Janni Nell (2013), "Atlantis Rising" by T.A. Barron (2013), "A Wolf's Journey" by Alicia Hamilton (2013), "The Serpent's Bite" by Warren Adler (2012), "Malice" by John Gwynne (2012), "Dancing on Glass" by Pamela Binnings Ewen (2011), and even "The Heroes" by Joe Abercrombie (2011). I could name several, several, several many dozen other books from recent years indeed that feature such copycat quicksand-peril scenes, but then that would take too much space for me to even do that, of course.
I sink, therefore I WAM!!!!

Which JUST makes me wonder if there's someone on this site who's taken offense at something I've said... Oh well.

Comment baiting is a common tactic with those who have an interest in seeing you respond in a negative manner. They often egg you on BEFORE and AFTER their attempt. The key is to be clever and not respond to their bull shit. Many of us know about that particular reviewer, but this isn't the place for details.
