The local air museum has one of the actual model carriers used for the film "Tora! Tora! Tora!". At (I think) 25mm scale, the Akagi is 32 feet long.

If you're a warplane geek, it's definitely worth a stop if you're in the Albany/Saratoga area.

Looking at the side-scan sonar imagery, as well as the ROV footage, you are talking about total destruction; a degree of fragmentation that is even WORSE than Yamato. Bow and Stern are not too far apart, but pointing in different directions; remainder of ship is utterly obliterated, only larger structures such as turrets and barbettes, heavy machinery and hull sections as anything identifiable. Possibly a combination of ammo exploding and implosion , but just complete destruction. Any hope that she would have been in a better condition than Yamato is over. It appears that the superstructure, or part of it, has been completely sheared off with the stack and compass platform, bridge attached and laying on its port side, starboard side up.

Mearns suggested that both magazines exploded, which considering the state of the wreck and debris field is possible. Before this, people were suggesting that she would be in better condition, that they had had time to secure her magazines, etc. But they sure both did blow up spectacularly The degree of damage obviously could be a factor, but they both were 50% larger than their closest -sized opponent. 46cm shells were seen scattered in the debris, so there is certainly no dispute that the shell magazines were blown apart. if I had to make a wild assed-guess? That Japanese penchant for creating 'odd' (aka, Imbecilic, Retarded...) ideas for some things, like San-Shiki shell - trying to make the main batteries into 46cm shotguns, essentially Never worked, never had a prayer of ever working. But they sure were somewhat unstable compared to normal ordnance. And they both had them in batch lots

Yup......stepped on beer can haha. Pretty much anything that didn't explode during the battle imploded when it sank. Ouch. Could they have deliberately exploded the magazines to scuttle it?
