Well, welcome fellow quarryman, these encounters are the dues we pay for our pleasure. Don't worry too much about exactly what he was thinking, you got lucky. And there ain't no substitute for luck. So, trust in your luck but don't lean to heavy on it. Next time, become aware of the truck before the driver becomes aware of you...

Look to the future, and most especially, how you might navigate that wonderful spot with less exposure to random encounters. Keep in mind, quarry workers tell stories, and the more they become aware of you, the more you'll need to keep well away from them. in this instance, you clearly gave up that it's all about mud, not a good starting point should a subsequent encounter become more "official"...

Read up on treaspass in your State, see a lawyer if necessary, and get good at knowing what to never admit or say, no matter what...

Man that it is F'd up! Worst that happened to me was when I was at Owens lake Ca. I was up to my neck in some sticky black clay when this car drove up way up on top of a hill and parked. You drive down that hill on a gravel road to get to the lake bed. This guy gets out of his car as I'm struggling to get loose of this clay inching up about a few inches at a time. He must have seen this black thing coming up out of the mud and took off LOL think of that scene in Star Trek TNG hahahaha!

If we are talking about getting caught, here is one of my experiences.

I was wearing my usual outfit (nylon rainsuit and lifejacket) which was bright noticable colors, yellow and orange. I was floating armpit deep in a mire, when some people came wandering by and one noticed me through the brush. They started walking towards me. I couldn't let them question me, so I had to get away. I couldn't get away because I was stuck for the time being, and I couldn't hide under either. They saw that I appeared to be trapped, but thankfully they walked right past me instead of interfering, which I wouldn't be able to explain what I was doing.
I waited until they were gone, and I started working my way out of the mud, which took a good 20 minutes.

4. I saw some litter out here and tried to clean it up.

The thing is, humans tend to get curious. Chances are, they will question me, and they probably won't understand. Worse, they might get more people to come see, and people would take pictures.
One time when I was caught, they got confused when I gave them an answer they didn't understand, “Why are you in the mud?” “Because I want to be.” They gave me a funny look. “Why do you want to be in the mud? Why are you wearing a life jacket?” That time I didn't answer, it is what it is. I ignored them until they wandered away and so I could continue my quicksand enjoyment. Until they came back with even more people . Then things got even worse, they started try and pull me out, but I told them that I didn't want to be pulled out (which pulling won't work anyway). They wouldn't leave me alone.
The reality is, I know how to get out on my own, and that they should leave me alone.
Lies can get sniffed out easily too, which is why I can't bullshit a story to them.

Kristine used to get tugboats on the Mississippi to blow horns at her. Don't know if that counts or not.

It's important not to get greedy. Don't go back to any place where you've pushed your luck too much. Came across a property owner in southern Illinois once and convinced him we were fishing. (With four naked women) Had an encounter with law enforcement just once and told them we were just taking photos with the ladies. No drugs, no partying, no trouble. We just kind of failed to notice the no trespassing signs and the missing section of fence. Showed ID and let him look at the gear and on our way with a warning. Take a lesson from the Bible and remember that a soft answer turns away wrath. Don't be confrontational. Don't say any more than you have to. And have stories and multiple exits prepared just in case.

I should probably wait for a new thread called "Busted!", but I got caught while wandering through the mud and water near a sulfur mine in TX. It was a strip mining operation, and I had found a place to park with no fence between me and the mud, and wandered in. While nobody was in line-of-sight that I saw, someone saw me and I had a truck load of guys show up to tell me I was trespassing, and if I left RIGHT THEN and did not come back, there wouldn't be trouble. I wouldn't have fought or disobeyed if a grandmother had come out and asked me to leave, I wasn't about to try saying "No" to what looked like a truckload of angry rednecks.

A pity, though. I would imagine they have some serious mud after a good rain there. All I had found before being told to leave was some knee deep stuff that was dumped on top of briars. (I had to pick thorns out of my feet afterward)
