Is there a Quicksand for Dummies guide out there?

Postby QuicksandCurious19 » Sun Jul 12, 2015 1:48 am

Hello everyone! :)

I am brand new here - It was only very recently that I discovered that I am really fascinated with the idea of sinking in quicksand. In other words, I have never done so before, but I really want to and I don't know a single thing about how to do it.

So (at the risk of sounding like a total idiot) I thought I would ask for help. Any tips for beginners? Where do I find quicksand? Is it safe to go alone or is there a risk that one may get stuck and need help? Is there any bacteria or any other health risks that could be an issue?

I probably sound godawful stupid, but I just really want to do this and I wasn't sure where else to go to figure out how.

Anyway, I'm really glad to have found this place. :)

Hope to be hearing from you soon!

I can't say I found learning to sink all that difficult. It was more a matter of persistence, and the fact that you have to get used to regularly doing something that nobody will understand. What others think shouldn't matter to you.

I went to wet places, tromped around them, and I mostly didn't sink until about the 10th or 12th location. Then, bingo, I got something good.

Just go to Google Maps and look for anything wet. Try to keep it to public land.

It's always safer with a trusted buddy but the reality is that this is going to be very hard to find. You can team up but back when I did that, it was plane tickets/lots of gas/hotel for somebody every time but one. The plus side is I had some very good companions. The downside was the cost of traveling just to sink in quicksand with somebody...yikes.

So, now I go alone and everything is within an hour's drive for me.

After many expeditions, I have still not suffered any serious injuries.

I only got stuck once -- in sandy stuff -- and it was during my first sink. Me and my buddy dug out. But the second time I was in that same stuff later that day, I kept moving and was okay. Mostly, when I feel it getting too sticky, I keep moving and stay unstuck. It is worth noting that I don't enjoy stuck, I enjoy sinking. If you like to be stuck, then, well, I can't help you, because I try not to get stuck!

I'm sure there's bacteria but so far, no problems, and no special measures taken. I would say, don't eat the quicksand, because it's probably not very healthy, and if you have a cut or scrape, cover it before sinking.

Locations, you can ask around here (but I don't share mine), wardrobe, you'll have to work it out for yourself as it varies from sinker to sinker, and the mechanics of getting in and out of your new quicksand pit are also a thing that will be trial and error.

I happen to like real quicksand and real deep mud because I am a sensual sinker who just enjoys the feeling of sinking. But if you have to have real drama, danger and peril, warning: real quicksand mostly just doesn't live up to the Hollywood horror. That is good news in that it means that sinking is actually possible. It's bad news if you were looking for an adrenaline kick.

"Quicksand For Dummies" would be a very interesting book. I wish I had time to write it...but I don't!

Most important pieces of advice:

1) Keep abreast of incoming tides should you try sinking around bodies of water

2) Have a well prepared "buddy" if you plan on going really deep

Thank you so much for replying! Already seeing if I can find some locations....

I guess my biggest concern is whether I try this alone or with a friend. Is it just plain stupid to go alone for your first time? How do you go about approaching a friend and asking for them to help you with this? Especially since I don't really know anyone else interested in this and I am not sure how to go about bringing up the subject with someone who may not understand it at all....

Hope that everyone is having a lovely day! :)

If you can get someone to go with you that you think won't ruin it for you, by all means, bring a friend. But most locations are pretty safe to do solo. Just avoid tidal areas unless you really know what you're doing.

In my experience. If you can take a couple of long strong ropes with you like good quality climbing rope in case you might be able to tie them to something sturdy. Preferably tie them to two different things in case of failure. I say this as I have to go alone but if you can, take a friend. Depending on how deep and thick the consistency is and how deep you sink remember that you do have to overcome suction and getting out might take time but in my opinion it's the getting trapped and having to struggle free that's all part of the fun!!!!

Keep us posted on how you get on.

Good luck.

I'm also new to this and this seems like a super helpful guide/site. I'd love to find somewhere to go. Any advice on a way to meet people who are into this? It'd be great to find someone to go track down and play in some deep mud with.
