I have a custom scene that is coming up for editing that actually specifies this. :)

It's ironic, but I think that my attention to getting good to excellent audio during the shooting phase has kept me from thinking along these lines for my regular material.

I'm starting to lean towards this though. Even with the recording setup I use, sometimes distance, and/or wind noise (even in the trees), or even insect noise can drown out what we want to hear.

Here is a YouTube clip of a female walking through some clay and getting stuck. It has some nice sounds in it:

Here is a compilation of PRP clips, with the original audio replaced by a series of squelching, sucking, slurping mud sounds:

I know where the original sound effects are from on that second one. Original video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpUaY1e9XHk

Though it's just a guy in pantyhouse, I think YouTube user "mudleggings" is is a mud sucking sound fetishist and has some of the best sucking sounds I've ever heard. If you're really into the sound of it, minimize his videos and enjoy!

Ooh, I am very much in favour of adding sound effects. Great noises can enhance any scene - some old cinema classics have unimpressive pits but the noises sell the idea of being a deadly sucking, bubbling trap.

Would be very appropriate for the "Hollywood quicksand" scenes - they are supposed to be fake movie quicksand anyway, and the movies often added fake bubbling noises.

Also, in a watery pit, if an actress is pretending to be stuck and trying to pull a leg out, fake suction sounds would really help with the illusion that she is really stuck rather than just pretending to not be able to move. And if she is lowering herself to make it seem like she is sinking, bubbling noises will create that illusion of actually sinking. It would be great for Hollywood or clay or any other type where the pit is liquid enough to allow submersion. The sounds will make it appear that even if the surface seems very liquid, there is thick, inescapable ooze a few inches below...

And as you say, sometimes even thick mud pits that SHOULD have natural sounds can sometimes have them be drowned out by wind or insects or whatever. I'd be in favour of adding noises to pretty much every scene that doesn't naturally have its own impressive sounds.
